from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A slingshot or slingshot is a person who is armed with a sling or a stick sling . In the military , a slingshot was a warrior , soldier or mercenary who belonged to the light infantry or auxiliary force and was used as a skirmisher . Slingshots were used from the Neolithic to the early modern period . They were an (inexpensive) alternative to archers and spear throwers . Specially shaped stones or slingshot were used as sling ammunition , which could be thrown remarkably accurately and far.

In ancient Rome there were art slingers who threw grapefruit-sized stones with likely short range in public performances .

Even today there are sports slingers who throw at targets in competitions. For example, slingshot championships are held in the Balearic Islands , whose inhabitants were already famous for the art of slinging in Roman times.
