Korahe zone

The Korahe Zone ( Somali Qorahey , Ge'ez ቆራሄ ) is an administrative zone of the Somali region in Ethiopia .

It is located roughly in the center of the region and borders Somalia in the far east . According to the 2007 census, it had 312,713 inhabitants, of whom 47,607 lived in urban areas. In 1997, 98.75% of the 242,276 inhabitants were Somali , 99.13% spoke Somali as their mother tongue. 5.88% (14,256) could read and write. The Somali in Korahe mainly include the communities of Ogadeni- Darod on.

The Korahe zone is divided into the four woredas Kebri Dehar , Shekosh , Debeweyn and Shilabo . Larger places in the Korahe zone are Kebri Dehar , Shekosh , Debeweyn and Shilabo .

The natural gas fields of Calub and Hilala are located in the woreda Shilabo. The most important livelihood of the population is agriculture, especially livestock. In the valley of the Fafen , which runs through the middle of the zone, the keeping of cattle, sheep and goats is supplemented with the cultivation of sorghum and maize ( agropastoralism ). To the east of the Fafen Valley, the nomadic husbandry of camels, sheep and goats dominates. To the west of the Fafen, camels as well as small livestock and cattle are kept. Cattle are exported via Kebri Dehar to Burao and Berbera in Northern Somalia / Somaliland and from there to the states of the Arabian Peninsula or to the Somali capital Mogadishu .

The Korahe zone is affected by the conflict between the separatist ONLF and the Ethiopian army, which has intensified since 2007. Human Rights Watch said the army in particular committed human rights abuses against civilians in the zone. In the vicinity of the towns of Warder (in the adjacent Warder zone ) and Shilabo in particular , villages were evacuated and some were subsequently burned down.
