Burao (also written Burco or Bur'o ) is a city in northern Somalia with around 159,200 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Togdheer region and part of the internationally unrecognized Somaliland .
The majority of the population belongs to the Somali clan of Isaaq .
geography
The temporarily dry Togdheer River ( Wabi Togdheer ) runs through the city. The climate in Burao is warm and dry all year round, as is everywhere in the northern Somali interior. There is limited rainfall in December and May.
history
In 1988, the Somali government army bombed Burao to push back the rebels of the Somali National Movement (SNM). In 1991 a gathering of clan elders took place in the city under the auspices of the SNM, at which Somaliland's independence from the rest of Somalia was declared on May 18. Since then, Burao, like other cities in the region, has been rebuilt and grown with immigrants from rural areas.
Economy and Infrastructure
Burao has a reliable supply of groundwater and electricity. A market complex has been open since 2007 and, after a year of construction, offers space for up to 2000 dealers.
In addition to numerous schools, the University of Burao has been teaching since 2004, and in 2010 the private Gollis University opened a campus in Burao in addition to its main location in the capital Hargeysa .
A bridge across the river connects the city it divides. There is also a local transport system with buses and via Burao Airport the airline Daallo Airlines plans to offer flights to Hargeysa and Berbera as well as international destinations such as Dubai in the near future.
