Daallo Airlines ( Arabic طيران دالو) is a Djiboutian airline headquartered in the special economic zone of Dubai Airport and based at Djibouti Airport . In February 2015, the company merged with Jubba Airways and its Kenyan subsidiary to form the African Airways Alliance , based in Mogadishu , Somalia .

history

On March 20, 1991, the airline started operations with a Cessna . It initially flew mainly with older Soviet aircraft types from Antonov , Ilyushin and Tupolev , which were gradually replaced by more modern ones. In July 2001, Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle was added as a destination from Djibouti , followed by London-Gatwick in October 2002 . The slogan in the following years was Connecting the Horn of Africa to the Global Village ( "the Horn of Africa with the global village connect").

In the meantime, larger Boeing machines were also operated , but they have now been returned to the leasing partners.

At the beginning of 2008, a subsidiary of the investment company Istithmar World from Dubai acquired shares in the company. The airline was to be reorganized and become the flag carrier of Djibouti , but from the end of 2009 it got into the financial difficulties of the parent company. Since 2009 it has been on the list of airlines that are prohibited from operating in the EU . Therefore, Daallo ended the scheduled flight service to the European airports Paris-CDG and London-Gatwick in the same year . In March 2010, Daallo had to cease operations completely for some time.

After the state-owned Djibouti Air ceased its flight service to Dubai in February 2012 , Daallo Airlines is the only airline that still offers scheduled flights in Djibouti and therefore describes itself as the national carrier for the Republic of Djibouti .

In February 2015, the company announced its merger with Jubba Airways to form the African Airways Alliance . Daallo Airlines will continue to be used as a brand name in the future.

Incidents

  • On February 2, 2016 , shortly after take-off from Mogadishu, an explosion occurred on board Daallo Airlines flight 159 , an Airbus A321 -111 with the registration number SX-BHS , which tore a hole in the fuselage. The machine then made an emergency landing in Mogadishu . A total of two of the 74 passengers were injured, one passenger was sucked out of the fuselage in the explosion and died. Somali investigators assume that the dead passenger was able to smuggle a bomb on board with his wheelchair, which, however, did not cause any serious damage when it detonated at low altitude. As a result of the incident, Daallo Airlines temporarily suspended its flights from Mogadishu. The plane had to be written off.
