The Russian company Tupolew ( Russian Открытое акционерное общество "Туполев" / Otkrytoje akzionernoje obschtschestvo "Tupolew" , English: Tupolev Public Stock Company; formerly OKB Tupolev), based in Moscow , was once one of the world's oldest and most important aircraft manufacturers . Since the end of 2006, Tupolev has been part of the newly founded Russian aviation consortium OAK .

history

Andrei Nikolajewitsch Tupolew , who together with Nikolai Yegorowitsch Zhukovsky had founded the ZAGI , also headed the Soviet state committee for investigating the use of metal in aircraft construction . On October 22, 1922, he set up his own design office, OKB Tupolev.

In total, over 300 aircraft projects have been created so far, from which around 90 prototypes have emerged. More than 40 types of aircraft reached series production. 18,000 civil and military Tupolev aircraft were produced, but only a few hundred were exported. The Tu-144 supersonic airliner took a technologically exceptional position .

In 2000 OKB was converted into a stock corporation which, in addition to the facilities in Moscow, has a production facility in Ulyanovsk , and in 2006 it was effectively nationalized again under the umbrella of OAK .

The medium-haul airliner Tu-204 / Tu-214 is currently in production, mostly in Kazan . The Tu-330 transport aircraft and the Tu-324 / Tu-414 regional airliner are currently under development . Older models such as the Tu-134 and Tu-154 were often converted in the DIY workshop or fitted with new engines until they were retired.

In addition to the civilian series, the military long-range supersonic bomber Tupolev Tu-160 is maintained, a new version of which, according to plans in 2015, a number of 50 units should be handed over to the air forces of the Russian Federation from 2023 . For the older models like the swing-wing bomber Tu-22M or the turbo-prop long-range bomber Tu-95 / Tu-142 , conversions and repairs are carried out; however, production was discontinued.

Military and civil aircraft types

The ANT-1 to ANT-6 aircraft are not to be confused with six propeller sleds of the same name, also built by OKB Tupolev between 1922 and 1924 , with which attempts were made to transition from wood to all-metal construction in Soviet aviation.

The Tupolev A-3 is an amphibious vehicle.
