The Tupolev ANT-22 ( Russian Туполев АНТ-22 ) was a Soviet flying boat from the mid-1930s. It was planned to use them as a long-range remote reconnaissance aircraft in the Navy. Ultimately, however, series production was abandoned and the ANT-22 only appeared as a prototype .
development
The ANT-22 was developed as a further development of the ANT-11 flying boat project in AGOS, a development group for medium and heavy all-metal aircraft under the direction of Andrei Tupolew , which was a subdivision of the ZAGI in the 1930s.
In July 1934, the construction of the prototype was completed. The first flight with the pilots T. W. Rjibenko and D. Iljinski took place on August 8, 1934 and it was decided to put the ANT-22 under the military designation MK-1 ("Морской крейсер", Morskoikreiser = naval cruiser) into service. This plan was later abandoned, although the machine was able to break two weight / height world records, as happened on December 8, 1936, when Rjibenko carried 10,000 kilograms of payload, later 13,000 kilograms to 1942 meters.
construction
The aircraft had two keeled boat hulls as a striking feature , which gave it a high level of stability on the water even in rough seas. The pilot's cabin was located between the fuselages in the wing , which had four spars and corrugated iron sheeting . On top of it were the six M-34R engines, mounted in pairs in tandem , on three tall tubular steel frames , which were relatively safe from splashing water. The tail was like all other assemblies of metal and possessed a continuous horizontal stabilizer . The ANT-22 was equipped with six weapon stands, one per hull in the bow, on the back over the rear wing connection to the fuselage and in the stern.
