The Tupolev PS-35 ( Russian Туполев ПС-35 ) is a Soviet airliner of the 1930s. The name stands for "Passaschirski samoljot" ( Russian Пассажирский самолет ), passenger plane. The factory name is ANT-35 (АНТ-35), after Andrei Nikolaevich Tupolev , the head of the design office .

development

The aircraft was developed from 1935 to create a replacement pattern for the PS-9 . Designer was by Tupolev salaried Alexander Arkhangelsky . When planning the project, he was guided by his SB-2 bomber design , from which he adopted the shape of the structure and tail unit. However, he designed the hull from scratch. In contrast to the PS-9, which had a corrugated iron cell, the PS-35 received a more modern fuselage cladding with smooth sheet metal. Two French Gnome Rhône 14K radial engines were used as propulsion systems, and later they were replaced by local M-85s. The series models each received two M-62IR. On August 20, 1936, the first flight of the prototype took place with Michail Gromow . The public presentation at the air parade in Tuschino took place just four days later .

The PS-35 was only built in a small series of nine aircraft, as it was a remarkably advanced design for its time, but was not designed for the originally required number of 20 passengers. The Soviet Union therefore acquired the license rights for the American DC-3 and built it as the Li-2 .

The PS-35 was used as an express airliner for Aeroflot on domestic routes. After the outbreak of war between Germany and the Soviet Union, the PS-35 were used as liaison aircraft or means of transport for high-ranking personalities.

On September 25, 1936, Michail Michailowitsch Gromow and the navigator Sergej Danilin achieved an average speed of 348 km / h with a PS-35 on the Moscow - Leningrad - Moscow route. The maximum speed flown at times was 400 km / h.

technical description

The PS-35 is a cantilever low- wing aircraft in all-metal half-shell construction with an oval fuselage cross-section. The passenger cabin is sound and heat insulated and heatable. The wing consists of three parts and is connected to the fuselage with two spars . As a special feature, the landing flaps run continuously under the fuselage. The tail unit is also made of metal in a normal self-supporting construction. The main landing gear will retract into the rear engine pods with the wheels sticking out halfway. The tail wheel is rigid.
