The Hargeisa Airport ( english Hargeisa International Airport ), according to the politician Muhammad Haji Ibrahim Egal also Regardless International Airport called, is the international airport of Hargeisa , capital of the internationally unrecognized Somaliland .

It is served by Daallo Airlines , Djibouti Airlines , Ethiopian Airlines , Jubba Airways , Flydubai and Air Arabia .

history

Hargeisa Airport was built as a British military airfield during the colonial era in 1954 . The runway was originally made of gravel. In 1958 a taxiway , terminal building and parking lots were installed.

After independence from British Somaliland , the runway was rebuilt and paved with a length of 2,438 m in 1973. Since then, only minor necessary repairs have been carried out. The new airport area is in the vicinity of the military airfield, which has not been used since then.

present

The runway is in fair to poor condition. This also applies to the taxiway, which branches off to the runway with a length of 245 m and a width of 23 m. Since the apron is only 200 m × 90 m, aircraft often maneuver and park in the adjacent gravel field. The paved areas have insufficient drainage. Lighting systems and effective protective fences are not available; Fire and rescue vehicles are exposed to the weather without any protection. Air freight is transferred to trucks directly in advance, as there is no separate cargo terminal.

Due to the location of Hargeisa in the area of the Berbera Corridor, a high-performance road connection that was expanded in 2005 and connects the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa with the Somali port city of Berbera , and the increased number of exiled Somalis, the airport is to undergo a fundamental modernization. The British government financed the construction of new terminal facilities as a partial expansion, which were inaugurated in May 2008. In January 2009, nine fire engines were acquired in this context.
