Berbera is a port city in northern Somalia on the Gulf of Aden , in Somaliland, which is not recognized internationally . Its population is estimated to be over 200,000. Most of them are members of the Somali clan of Issa .

Berbera lies on the edge of the hot and dry coastal plain of Guban . The regional division of the city is different; according to the administrative structure of Somalia it belongs to the Woqooyi Galbeed region , the capital of which is Hargeysa , in Somaliland it is the capital of the Saaxil (Sahil) region.

history

In the Periplus Maris Erythraei (1st century AD) Berbera, called Malao there, is described as a trading place for myrrh , frankincense , spices and copal .

From 1870 to 1942 Berbera was the capital or at least the administrative seat of British Somaliland . During the Cold War , Berbera's port facilities were used by the Soviet Union and later by the United States .

Economy and Infrastructure

The city has a seaport . Roads connect Berbera with Hargeysa and Burao . The long runway at Berbera Airport was laid out by the Soviet Union in the 1970s.

Sheep, gum arabic , frankincense and myrrh are exported through the port of Berbera ; Sea trade is mainly conducted with Aden in Yemen on the other side of the Gulf of Aden. Since the Eritrea-Ethiopia war , Berbera has also been a major export port for neighboring Ethiopia , making it the most important source of foreign currency for Somaliland. The Somaliland Navy, established in 2009 with the support of Great Britain , also operates from here .
