Stefan Maierhofer (born August 16, 1982 in Gablitz ) is an Austrian football player .

Career

society

From the age of 8 to 14, Maierhofer played for SV Gablitz, who was based in his place of birth, and until he was 20 , he played for FC Tulln , for whom he played in the first regional league for one season after his youth. For the 2002/03 season he moved to the regional division First Vienna FC , the oldest football club in Austria , which he left after one season. The trained chef became a top performer at the national division club SV Langenrohr and scored 26 goals in two fourth division seasons.

For the 2005/06 season he moved to Germany for Bayern Munich . In his second team , he was team captain and scored 21 goals in 42 games. After being nominated for the training camp of the professional team before the start of the 2006/07 season , he made his debut on October 28, 2006 (9th match day) in a 2-0 win at home against Eintracht Frankfurt by substituting Claudio Pizarro in the Bundesliga in the 88th minute . With this commitment, he is one of the Bundesliga players, together with Jan Koller and Stefan Brasas , who are tallest at 202 cm.

Before the end of the 2006/07 season , he left Bayern's second team and was eligible to play for the second division club TuS Koblenz on February 1, 2007 . In the following season he played only ten times for league rivals SpVgg Greuther Fürth until January 7, 2008 , before returning to Austria.

With a substitution in the 57th minute for Mario Bazina on February 16, 2008 (24th matchday), he made his debut for Bundesliga club SK Rapid Wien , who won 2-0 at SK Austria Kärnten . He scored his first goal on March 2, 2008 (27th matchday) in a 2-0 win in the away game at SK Sturm Graz . At the end of the season, in which he scored seven goals in eleven games, he won the championship with the team. In the following season he was second in the championship with 35 missions and 23 goals scored.

After only three completed games at the beginning of the 2009/10 season , Maierhofer moved to England for first division promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers , for whom he played in his first game on September 12, 2009 (5th matchday) in the 1: 3 defeat at Blackburn Rovers scored the only goal. In March 2010 Maierhofer moved on loan for a month to the English second division club Bristol City , for which he was used three times. On April 3, 2010 (33rd matchday) he took over in the 1-1 game against Nottingham Forest - substituted in the 82nd minute - the part of the injured goalkeeper, as three outfield players had already been substituted. Since the second division had decided against extending the loan, Maierhofer returned to Wolverhampton after his last game on April 10, 2010 (34th matchday) in a 1-0 win over Swansea City .

For the 2010/11 season he was loaned to the German second division team MSV Duisburg in August 2010 and made his first appearance on the 22nd of the month (1st matchday) in a 3-1 win in the away game against VfL Osnabrück . He scored two goals in the 4-1 home game against FC Ingolstadt 04 on August 28, 2010 (2nd matchday). With the MSV Duisburg he reached the German Cup - Finals 2011 , for which Maierhofer with four goals had contributed in the course of the competition. In the 5-0 defeat of MSV in the final against FC Schalke 04 , Maierhofer was not used due to a foot injury that was not yet fully cured.

Maierhofer returned to England for the time being, as MSV Duisburg could not raise the financial means for an obligation. In August 2011 he returned to Austria for Bundesliga club FC Red Bull Salzburg . In Salzburg he wore the shirt with the shirt number 9 again and was supposed to replace Joaquín Boghossian there . On January 7, 2013, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

Two days later, 1. FC Köln signed him . He made his debut for 1. FC Köln on matchday 20 in a 2-1 win at home against Erzgebirge Aue . He scored his only goal for Cologne on matchday 23 in the game against Union Berlin to make it 2-0. After his contract with 1. FC Köln was no longer extended beyond the 2012/13 season, Maierhofer remained without a club until he signed a contract with the English second division club FC Millwall in March 2014, which was valid until the end of the season. He made his debut on March 15, 2014 (36th matchday) in a goalless draw at home against Charlton Athletic ; his only two goals in eleven league games he scored on April 19, 2014 (43rd match day) in a 2-1 win in the away game against Middlesbrough FC .

On November 19, 2014 Maierhofer signed a contract with the relegation-threatened Austrian Bundesliga club SC Wiener Neustadt . This was limited to the end of the 2014/15 season, but contained an exit clause for any international transfer in winter. In the 2-0 win in the game against Wolfsberger AC , he made his debut and scored the first goal in the 47th minute. Although Maierhofer only played 4 games for Wiener Neustadt, the club will not award Maierhofer's shirt number 39 in his honor until further notice. The club, which was relegated at the end of the 2014/15 season as bottom of the table, justified this as follows:

"As a motivator, he was able to infect the team with his positive energy during a difficult phase, and he helped SC Wiener Neustadt to achieve a previously rarely experienced public awareness."

- SC Wiener Neustadt

He left Austria on 9 January 2015 and returned to the English second division club FC Millwall by the end of the season. On February 12, 2016, the Slovak first division team and reigning champions FK AS Trenčín announced that Maierhofer would be signed up to the end of the 2015/16 season . On February 27, 2016 (20th matchday), Maierhofer made his debut in the team that lost 2-0 in the home game against ŠK Slovan Bratislava . He left the Slovaks at the end of the season.

In January 2017 he moved back to Austria for Bundesliga club SV Mattersburg , where he received a contract valid until June 2017, which was extended until June 2018. After the 2017/18 season he left Mattersburg.

On September 11, 2018, Maierhofer moved to FC Aarau in the Swiss Challenge League , where he received a contract that ran until June 2019. At the end of June 2019, he extended his contract for another year. After 40 appearances in the second division for Aarau, he left the club early in January 2020. He then returned to Austria and moved to WSG Tirol . For the Tyroleans he made 13 appearances in the Bundesliga and scored two goals. For the 2020/21 season he switched to league rivals FC Admira Wacker Mödling , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 2021.

National team

Maierhofer was nominated in April 2008 by Josef Hickersberger in the extended squad for the European Championship 2008 . Under Karel Brückner , who had since taken over from Hickersberger, he made his first appearance in the national jersey on August 20, 2008 in a 2-2 draw in the international test match against Italy . He scored his only goal on September 5, 2009 in a 3-1 victory over the Faroe Islands as part of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup .

Others

Because of a broken nose , he had to wear a special mask for a long time, which earned him the nickname “Phantom von Hütteldorf”.

At the end of January 2009 he was a guest judge for one episode at Austria's Next Topmodel .

On May 2, 2016, he was bitten in the chest by an opponent when his club AS Trenčín lost 3-1 to Spartak Trnava in the first Slovak football league. Both Maierhofer and his biting opponent received the yellow card for the action.
