The Austrian Football Championship 1963/64 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The regional leagues East (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), Middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and West (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the State League A. The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.
First level - State League A
General
In the championship of the 1963/64 season, Rapid was able to replace the three-time series winner Austria as Austrian football champions. The lead was relatively clear, the 23rd title win was won four rounds before the end (May 30th) thanks to a 1-0 win against Schwechater SC with a Flögel goal.
The first rounds in spring were marked by cancellations and great deadlines. The President of the State League, Selzer, had therefore proposed that the ÖFB Cup be canceled (which, however, was rejected by the majority of the clubs).
Shifts
The game of Austria Wien against the Wiener Sportclub scheduled for October 6th was postponed to October 30th at the request of Austria because of their participation in the European Cup of Masters (2-1 victory for Austria); Linz ASK, on the other hand, had to play its home game against Schwechater SC (1-0 win for Linz) on October 20th, which is why he protested. The ÖFB justified its decision with the fact that in the case of Austria Wien their opponent Gornik would also have paused, while Dinamo Zagreb would have played as well as LASK.
The for the 7./8. The 17th round scheduled for March was completely canceled due to the fact that the places (snow) could not be used, whereby it was questioned whether every cancellation was necessary. The supplements were on 6./7. May played, so the following rounds were postponed.
European Cup
Rapid started in the European Cup of National Champions in 1965 , cup winner Admira also competed in the European Cup of Cup Winners in 1965 and the Sport Club and the GAK registered for the 1965 Messestädte Cup .
Rapid Vienna got over the Shamrock Rovers from Ireland clearly (H 3: 0, A 2: 0), while they did not score in the round of 16 against Glasgow Rangers . After the 0: 1 on November 18 in Ibrox-Park against the (then) 34-time Scottish champions, the Viennese expected good chances, which also (because it was a public holiday) on December 8, 70,000 visitors to the Prater Stadium lured, but the striker's performance proved to be inadequate.
In the cup winners competition, Admira had already lost their chances of winning 3-1 at home against Legia Warsaw in a double event with the sports club (Messestädtecup) in the Prater Stadium on September 2 , and before the return game there were also injury concerns, although two players suffered bruises in a traffic accident in Warsaw. Under these circumstances, the 1-0 defeat at the Legia Stadium was no shame.
In the trade fair city cup, the GAK, which only started on September 24th, lost only 3: 3 at NK Zagreb , which is why hopes of progress were not unjustified, but the Graz team suffered a 6-0 defeat at home on October 7th.
The Viennese sports club mentioned above got over SC Leipzig 2-1 at home and 1-0 away within a week (September 2nd / 9th) . On October 28th in Vienna and on November 4th in Budapest there were matches against Ferencvaros with home wins (1-0 and 2-1), but since there was no away goals rule at that time, a third match was necessary November was played again in Budapest and ended 2-0 for the Hungarians. Munich was initially chosen as the venue, but this failed because it was the day of penance and prayer in Germany, on which sporting events were prohibited (and Ferencvaros had not agreed to a move to Augsburg on November 17).
statistics
Rapid with four points ahead of Austria according to the autumn table and two points ahead of Austria according to the spring table (in both rounds only one defeat and in spring with 9 wins one victory less than in autumn), since the 6th round continuously at the top - these are the most important statements about the title race. Austria itself, as the reigning champions, had already lost a lot of ground in the autumn, only thanks to the 3-2 home win on November 3rd (8th round) against rivals Rapid, the "violets" had to thank that they had not already won Time hopelessly lagged behind.
The picture of the three relegation candidates after autumn (Simmering 9 points, Kapfenberg 8 and Dornbirn 6, while SVS Linz was 11th with 10 points) changed to Simmering 8, SVS Linz and Dornbirn 7 each in the spring table, while now Kapfenberg was placed in 11th place with 10 points - in total enough for the Upper Styrians to have escaped fate.
The last two rounds were decisive for all three relegated teams and also for Kapfenberg. Dornbirn was out of the running with the 2: 3 home defeat on June 14th against fellow rivals Simmering - because 13 points meant three points behind Kapfenberg, which in turn was able to defeat SVS Linz 3: 2 in a direct duel and now 16 points had on the account. SVS and Simmering were still one point ahead of Kapfenberg. But while in the last round of the KSV at Wr. Neustadt won 2-1 thanks to goals from Fritz Cejka and Ignaz Puschnik , it set the other two, Simmering 3: 4 against the Sport-Club, SVS 2: 4 against Schwechat, home defeats.
There were 637 goals (374 home, 263 away) and 97 home and 50 away wins and 35 draws. 35 of 43 penalties (H 21, A 22) could be converted. A total of 299 players were used, with Vienna needing the most (24) and the GAK the least (18). A total of 16 players were excluded, with 11 players in the fall.
The number of viewers was 1.163,000 and was thus below that of the previous year (1.205,000).
watch TV
A one-hour recording of the Schwechat match against Rapid Vienna from 10 p.m. had already been planned for March 24th, but this project had to be postponed because there was still no final agreement between the State League and the Austrian Broadcasting Company . So there was the “TV premiere” on March 30th at Wiener Sport-Club against Austria Wien (1-0), whereby this circumstance meant that instead of the normal 15,000 to 20,000 visitors, only 4,500 came to the Vienna stadium. The match was shown directly from 3:30 p.m., commentator was Dr. Kurt Jeschko . On June 1st there was obviously the last broadcast with Vienna versus Rapid (commentator Heribert Meisel) from 4.30 p.m.

Second performance level - regional league
Regional League East
In the regional league, SC Wacker Wien won the championship title.
In the half of the championship, Kremser SC was two points ahead of SC Eisenstadt with 7 wins, 4 draws and 2 defeats (18 points, 32:15 goals) ; SC Wacker Wien was only in 6th place, but only four points apart (23:23 goals).
The second half of the season was marked by many cancellations due to weather conditions, the 14th round (first spring round was scheduled for June 13th / 14th, i.e. after the planned end of the championship, i.e. after the actual 26th and final round on June 6th / 7th) postponed; it started with the 15th round, in which Pinkafeld against Slovan and Siegendorf against Eisenstadt had to be canceled. The 16th round (including the clash between Wacker Wien and Krems) was scheduled for March 7th, but there were a lot of cancellations this weekend, including these matches.
In the 17th round (March 14/15) only the Sunday matinee SK Slovan Olympia Vienna against Wacker Vienna could be played, which Wacker won 3-1. Something similar happened in the 18th round, where the state league games had to be canceled in the entire area of Vienna and the surrounding area, due to heavy rainfalls. Only the Sunday matches Wienerberg - Pinkafeld and Günselsdorf - Stadlau were played.
The 16th round was added on Easter (March 28/29), whereby Wacker Vienna not only retaliated with the 3-0 on Easter Sunday against Krems for the 3-0 in the 3rd autumn round, but also - now also 20th Points like Krems - behind the Lower Austrians in second place.
In the 4th / 5th In the 19th round played in April, there was a change in leadership, as Wacker Wien won 5-1 at Pinkafeld, while Krems won 2-2 against Günselsdorf. A match of the 18th round, namely St. Pölten against Krems (3: 1), took place as an addendum on April 11th (international break, in which there was also the federal state cup).
The 20th round was played on the Thursday public holiday, May 7th, while previously on 18th and 19th round. April and 25./26. April 21st and 22nd round were held. In the official 23rd round, played on 9/10. May, Wacker Vienna received a surprising 0-1 home defeat against Gloggnitz, so that the fallen Kremser (with 27 points) came back to first place with equal points; at this time, however, the ASV Siegendorf was ahead due to the loss points (one game less and 26 points).
The Pentecost supplementary games (May 16/17) resulted in a 2-1 home defeat for Siegendorf against Eisenstadt and a 3-0 win for Wacker over FC Philips Vienna in terms of title races. In the on 23./24. On May 24th, Wacker only played 1-1 at Elektra, but since Krems lost 1.2 at Siegendorf, the lead increased to 3 points - and the Siegendorf team even got ahead of Krems.
Due to further supplementary matches on Thursday May 28th, which Wacker Wien was not present, Krems even fell back to 4th place with a 2: 7 debacle at Wienerberg and ASK Gloggnitz overtook Siegendorf 2-1 thanks to a 2-1 win Rank 2 and was able to intervene in the fight for the title.
Before the addition of the 14th round, only Gloggnitz, one point behind Wacker, had the chance, but was dependent on outside help. The two opponents played their matches on June 13th, and Wacker Wien won the title in front of 6,000 (!) Spectators with a 2-0 home win against Siegendorf, while Gloggnitz performed poorly at 4-0 at SC Pinkafeld. For the Pinkafelder, on the other hand, this was the last chance to escape relegation, but rival SV Mattersburg won 5: 3 at Eisenstadt. On June 14th, Krems lifted himself back to second place with a 3-2 win at Stadlau in what was actually the last game of the championship due to the match that was not scheduled for 6 p.m.

Regional league middle
The regional league center was drawn on July 26, 1963 in Leoben , with the first round scheduled for September 1.
SK Sturm Graz was able to celebrate the championship title after Austria Klagenfurt had led after autumn - albeit with 21 points tied ahead of the Grazers (34:11 compared to 25:11).
It was a duel with the violets from Klagenfurt, where the match in the 8th round on November 3rd went 2-0 to the Carinthians, who took over the table lead with 13 points and one point ahead of Sturm, before the return match in the 23rd round (May 9th) the gap was one point (Klagenfurt 31, Sturm 30; both teams had lost some points in the 13 rounds in between, but were six and five points ahead of Ranshofen); Now Sturm turned the tables and defeated the Lindwurmstädter clearly 4: 1 (the game management had been transferred to a Hungarian referee named Oranyosi), then there was a stalemate until the last round (both played a draw in the 24th round, then there was a victory for both). In this last round on June 21, the Klagenfurters should have made one point more than the Grazers thanks to the better goal difference (58:22 compared to 50:22 from Sturm), but it was the other way around: While the Grazers at the relegated Villacher SV with 3: 1 won and thus managed the title on their own, Klagenfurt had to be content with a 2-2 at Radenthein. The "Neue Zeit" (predecessor of the "Kärntner Tageszeitung") of June 23 commented that "Austria's playful ability was not enough to win the dramatic chest-to-chest battle with Sturm Graz" and on the VSV -1: 3 the newspaper wrote that the "Villachers did everything, played extremely hard, but were too weak in terms of play - and in addition there were not to be despised fights between the two fan camps in the stands and the police did not complain about a lack of employment had."

Regionalliga West
In the Regionalliga West, FC Wacker Innsbruck fixed the championship title. It was the first time that a Tyrolean club was promoted to the top Austrian division.
The championship only went on 27./28. June ended, but FC Wacker Innsbruck, who had been the title holder since the 19th of 22 rounds, played their final match a few days earlier and defeated BW Feldkirch 9-2 away, "befitting" the bottom of the table. The Innsbruckers, trained by ex-Wacker-Wien player Artur Brinek (Turl Brinek), managed to get through the entire eleven matches of the first half of the season without losing points (42: 8 goals) and they were at the weekend of 16./17. November went into the winter break with eight points ahead of the tied SC Kufstein and SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz . The first loss of points was only in the 13th round due to a 2-2 draw at FC Lustenau 07 , as they only drew in two other matches afterwards.
According to the source of the FOOTBALL IN AUSTRIA website, there was an obvious misunderstanding that was not recognized by the responsible bodies as a reason for excuse, when Austria Lustenau did not play for the game against Wattens scheduled for Saturday, November 16. The Vorarlbergers were of the opinion that the match (as was customary at the time) will be played on Sunday, November 17th. The responsible certification committee verified the match 3-0 for Wattens.
