The Austrian Football Championship 1954/55 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The also professionally run State League B served as the substructure for State League A , but only clubs from Vienna , Lower Austria , Burgenland , Upper Austria and Styria played. The Tauern League ( Salzburg , Carinthia ) and the Arlbergliga ( Tyrol , Vorarlberg ) were organized on an amateur basis for clubs from western Austria . The respective national leagues of the federal states acted as the third performance level.

First level - State League A

General

The championship in the state league was contested with 14 teams that met twice during the entire season. The Vienna was in the playing season for the 6th time Austrian football champions are and celebrated their so far last great success. Defending champion Rapid Vienna took third place. The Döblinger's last title win was in the 1943/44 game year in the Gauliga Ostmark. The number of teams in relegation has been reduced from three to two this season. This hit the bottom two of the table, Linzer ASK and SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz, who were therefore no longer represented in the first division in the next season.

Qualification for the European Cup

Rapid Vienna qualified despite his third place in the table for the first European Cup of National Champions in 1955/56 . The Hütteldorfer benefited from the fact that the organizer, the French newspaper L'Équipe , invited mainly the most popular teams of the time, and therefore not always the champions of the respective countries.

    State League B

    General

The champions of the State League B rose directly, the runner-up was allowed to deny the relegation. The last two teams were relegated to the respective national leagues. Last season, five clubs had to relegate. Due to the reduction in the number of relegations, only three teams were now able to move up to the State League B (third place was vacated through the relegation of ESV Austria Graz to the State League). This meant that the five regional champions from Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria and Burgenland had to play for three places in the state league B in a promotion round.

    General

The Arlbergliga counted next to the Tauern League to the second level on an amateur basis. The master took part in the qualification for the State League A. Since Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz was relegated from the state league A to the Arlbergliga and there was no promoted team, the three bottom of the table, instead of the last two teams in the table as in previous years, had to relegate to their respective national league.

Relegation to the State League A

The winner of the relegation games between the champions of the Tauern League and that of the Arlbergliga played against the second-placed club in the State League B for promotion to the State League A for the 1953/54 season. The other promotion place was reserved for the champions of the State League B. In contrast to the previous year, where the first two of the State League B immediately rose and the third took part in the relegation, there were only two promoted players this year.

The Arlberg league champions FC Dornbirn first played against the Tauern league champions Austria Klagenfurt to qualify for the relegation games for the state league A. The Vorarlbergers clearly won with a total score of 8: 4, but were unlucky in the deciding game for promotion to the state league A against the second-placed State League B, ESV Austria Graz. The first two games (July 3 in Graz 2: 2, July 10 in Dornbirn 3: 3, with Graz catching up a 1: 3 deficit within 3 minutes just before the end) ended in a draw, so the decision was made in another encounter had to fall for the climb. Here the Styrians were able to prevail on neutral ground, namely on July 17, 1955 in Linz (source: "Arbeiterzeitung Wien" of July 19), clearly 4-0.
