The Austrian Football Championship 1985/86 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The first-class 1st division and the second-class 2nd division were merged this season through a playoff mode. The regional league east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) as well as the regional leagues of Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria acted as the third performance level .

Playoff leagues (1st and 2nd division)

mode

The championship in the 1st and 2nd division was initially held in autumn with 12 teams each in a single round, so that each team initially completed 22 games. This was followed by the division into the master playoff (1st to 8th of the 1st division), middle playoff (9th to 12th of the 1st division and 1st to 4th of the 2nd division) and relegation playoff (5th to 12th division) . to 12th of the 2nd division) for the spring championship. This meant that in the master playoff champions and European Cup starting places were determined, in the middle playoff promotions and relegations between 1st and 2nd division and in the relegation playoff the relegated to the regional and national leagues. In the championship and relegation playoffs, games, goals and points were taken into the spring, the teams in the middle playoff naturally did not take any points and goals.

A 0: 3 penalty certification of the March 22nd match between Rapid and LASK, which Rapid had won 3: 0 on March 28, deprived the Hütteldorfer of the title. Coach Vlato Markovic had used Petar Brucic , who was automatically suspended after seven yellow cards.

General

Wiener Austria was able to become Austrian football champions for the 18th time ; for the third time in a row. As an Austrian champion you could also qualify for the 1987 European Cup , where the violets reached the second round. Cup finalist Rapid was allowed to take part in the 1987 European Cup , where the team also made it to the round of 16. LASK and Wacker Innsbruck were supposed to represent Austria's football in the 1987 UEFA Cup ; while LASK was eliminated in the 1st round, Wacker was already in the Tyrolean 2nd class middle . The newly founded FC Swarovski Tirol had taken over its license and was allowed to start in its place in the UEFA Cup. The newly founded club promptly reached the semi-finals there.

In the middle playoff, however, the decision about promotion and relegation was made: the Vienna and the Wiener Sport-Club were able to play in the 1st division, in return Donawitzer SV Alpine and the SAK in 1914 were relegated to the 2nd division. In the relegation playoff, the 1. Schwechater SC, the Favoritner AC and the Villacher SV decided to relegate to the Regional League East and the Carinthian Regional League. VfB Mödling from the Regionalliga Ost and SK Kufstein from the Regionalliga West rose directly to the 2nd division, Union Vöcklamarkt was determined as the third climber in the Middle Group, a relegation tournament of the regional champions of Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria.
