The Austrian Football Championship 1978/79 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The single-track 2nd division served as a substructure for the 1st division . The third level was the Regionalliga Ost (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), the Alpine League ( Salzburg , Tyrol ) and the regional leagues of Vorarlberg , Carinthia , Upper Austria and Styria .

First performance level - 1st division

General

The championship in the 1st division was contested with 10 teams, each of which met four times during the entire season. As in the previous season, Wiener Austria was able to become Austrian football champions for the 13th time . As an Austrian champion you could also qualify for the 1980 European Cup , where the violets were eliminated in the first round against the Danish club Vejle BK (away 2: 3, home 1: 1). Cup winner and at the same time relegated (!) SpG Wattens-Wacker Innsbruck was allowed to take part in the 1980 European Cup , where the team fell by the wayside in the first round - 1: 2 at home and 0: 1 away against Lokomotiva Kosice (ČSSR). The two Viennese first division clubs Rapid and Sport-Club represented Austrian football in the 1980 UEFA Cup , but did not get beyond the first round; the Rapidler with a home 0: 1 and away 2: 3 against VTK Diosgyör Miskolc from Hungary, the Dornbacher against Universitatea Craiova from Romania (H 0: 0, A 1: 3).

With the syndicate between Wattens and Wacker Innsbruck, the last place in the championship had to relegate. He was replaced with the Linz ASK by the champion of the second-class 2nd division in the following season.

A 0: 3 penalty certification against Rapid Vienna in the 35th and penultimate round ultimately had no special effect: At the match on June 15 at the Sport-Club-Platz in Dornbach (1: 1), the Hütteldorfer coaching duo Franz Binder Junior / Adi Köstenberger, a third foreigner came on in the 88th minute of the game with the Dane Lars Francker , but there were already two on the field ( Bernd Krauss and Vukan Perovic ). Thanks to this certification on June 20, the Wiener Sport-Club was already confirmed ahead of time as a participant in the UEFA Cup, SK Sturm Graz and Rapid, both with 37 points, met in the last round in Vienna, the Rapidlers won 4: 0.

Oddities

Besides the fact that the Spg Wattens / Innsbruck had indeed won the Cup but were relegated, the championship were already some coaches to (premature) holiday or was towards the end - as here at relegated - the unsuccessful coach Lajos Baróti after Budapest returned ( Josef Sikic was the "captain of the sinking ship"). At Rapid Wien, the coaching duo Binder Junior / Köstenberger named above with regard to the 0: 3 certification against the Wiener Sport-Club coached instead of coach Karl Schlechta , at SV Austria Salzburg Horst Hirnschrodt represented Alfred Günthner, who was in Canada .

Second performance level - 2nd division

    General

The championship in the 2nd division was contested with 16 teams who met twice during the entire season. The master of the 2nd division, the LASK, was promoted to the 1st division, the last three placed from. FC Dornbirn had to go to the Vorarlberg regional league, ASV Kittsee had to relegate to the Regionalliga Ost and USV Anif to the Salzburg regional league. The promotion to the 2nd division was regulated more complicated, as there was an asymmetrical third performance level this season: The champion of the Regionalliga Ost, ASV Stockerau, rose directly. The champions of the Alpine league also met the Vorarlberger Landesmeister in the qualifying games of the West Group, while the Champions of Carinthia, Styria and Upper Austria played their newly promoted SK Vorwärts Steyr in the Middle Group.
