The Austrian Football Championship 1983/84 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The single-track 2nd division served as a substructure for the 1st division . The third level was the Regionalliga West (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) and the regional leagues of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria.

General

The first half of the season ended on the last weekend in November. December the first second half of the season. After the 15th round there was a trio at the top: Austria, LASK and Sturm each had 10 wins and 3 draws, so 23 points. Rapid with 8 wins and 5 draws was two points behind. The crisis-ridden FC Wels was 10th with 14 points. The final trio was made up of St. Veit (10), FavAC (9) and Neusiedl (0).

Austria and Rapid (who celebrated several victories at all) initially showed no nakedness in the second half of the season, both got the maximum points in the first four rounds, then (round 20) there was a draw for both. With the 4-1 derby win on April 7th, Rapid equalized the score - falling one point behind due to their own two draws (with one of Austria at the same time). The 2: 3 Austria defeat at VÖEST Linz in the 27th round (May 18th) brought Rapid the table lead for 2 rounds, which was lost again with the 0-0 in the penultimate round at Admira (May 29th) . The title decision was only made in the last round, but in which the two competitors Austria and Rapid won, which meant that the Rapidler stayed in second place and missed the double . With the win at Sturm Graz, Austria took away the Grazers' participation in the UEFA Cup in the last match of the season.

The greatest performance in the European Cup was offered by Rapid Vienna, which - like Austria seven years earlier - reached the final of the cup winners' competition . For the time being, Besiktas Istanbul had been eliminated (H 4: 1, A 1: 1), then there were the memorable encounters with Celtic Glasgow and Dynamo Dresden . Against the Scots with the riots in Celtic Park in Glasgow and thus the repetition of the game at Old Trafford in Manchester , then against Leipzig a 3-0 from the first leg was "turned" by a 5-0. (March 6/20, 1985). Dinamo Moscow were knocked out 3-1 at home and 1-1 away. In the final on May 15 at the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam , FC Everton showed Rapids limits with a 3-1 victory.
Austria advanced to the quarterfinals in the championship cup . After victories over FC La Valletta (4: 0 each), the BFC Dynamo ( Dynamo Berlin ) in the Friedrich-Jahn-Sportpark scored 3: 3 on October 24 and won the second leg in the Hanappi Stadium 2: 1. The Liverpool was then but a size too large. More than the 1-1 home on March 6th didn't look out, at the Anfield Stadium (also called Anfield-Road ) there was a 4-1 two weeks later.
In the UEFA Cup, LASK (after first two 1-0 victories over Östers IF Växjö from Sweden) clearly failed to Dundee United (H 1: 2, A 1: 5). SSW Innsbruck faced Real Madrid in the first round - after a 5-0 defeat at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu - the Tyroleans won 2-0 at the Tivoli Stadium.

particularities

The match between SK Sturm Graz and the Wiener Sport-Club (2: 1) from the first round (August 19) was certified 3: 0 for Sturm on August 24, and a fine of 10,000 Schillings was imposed; the Viennese had used Wenanty Fuhl without justification ; the approval by the DFB was not received in time. However, it arrived later, so that Fuhl was allowed to participate in the other games of the sports club. In addition, this certification had no effect that the sports club would be ranked worse in the event of a tie.
The premature dissolution of the Welser SC brought a decrease in viewers compared to the previous year (on average it was a minus of 200 per round; the Welser had had a good visit).
The final match between Sturm Graz and Austria Wien also brought about rioting by the audience, some of which were triggered by a smoke bomb thrown into the audience by an Austria fan. Two children were injured by this smoke bomb, the ruthless Austria fan also kicked a police officer in the abdomen.

statistics

Without the 3-0 certifications against Wels, there is the following picture:
In the home table Austria had three points ahead of Rapid with 27 points (24 points each for Innsbruck and LASK). between with 21 points, in the away table three points ahead of Austria - here LASK was third with 16 points. Neusiedl has (due to the lack of certification against Wels) with 2 draws just two home points and had no point away. At home, newly promoted SV St. Veit (13 points) was penultimate, while away it was surprisingly VÖEST Linz (5 points with one win and three draws).
There were 60 penalties in total, 50 of which were converted.

TV contract

The game committee of the ÖFB and the ORF agreed on a new contract running until the summer of 1986 with six million schillings a year for the broadcasting rights of the championship games, with games being played on Fridays from mid-April to mid-October. (There was also compensation for European Cup home games with 500,000 Schillings for the first round up to 1.5 million Schillings for the final round.) There was no agreement because of the stadium advertising, where the ORF wanted fewer banners. This was due to the fact that most of the clubs did not own the pitch.
