The Austrian football championship was held for the 108th time in 2019/20 . The top division is the Austrian Bundesliga , which was held for the 46th time this season and for the second time since the 1992/93 season was played by twelve teams. These determined the participants in the master and qualification group in initially two rounds; The Austrian football champions and the first three representatives of Austria in the international competitions of the 2019/20 season were then determined in the champions group. In addition, Austria's fourth participant in the Europa League qualification was determined in the Europa League playoffs. The fifth participant was the ÖFB Cup winner. The second highest division is the 2nd division , which was held for the 45th time in 2019/20.
Game operations during the COVID-19 pandemic
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , gaming operations were initially completely stopped on March 10, 2020 on the instructions of the Austrian federal government . At a club conference in mid-May, it was decided to resume Bundesliga matches from June 2nd after the cup final . It was later decided to continue the second division season and June 5 was confirmed as the resumption date. From now on, both competitions took place without spectators.

Clubs of the Bundesliga 2019/20 |
The Bundesliga is the top division in Austrian football. This was held for the 46th time in the 2019/20 season and determined the 108th Austrian football champion. As in previous years, the sports betting provider Tipico was the main sponsor , which is why the official league name was Tipico-Bundesliga .
Lower Austria, Vienna and Styria each provided two clubs, Burgenland, Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg one each.
The TV provider Sky Deutschland GmbH had the rights to show all Bundesliga games in full length that were broadcast on pay TV on the sky sport austria channel. The broadcaster showed all games in conference call and as individual games. In addition, four games and a highlight program were broadcast on free TV. Furthermore, the play-off games for the Europa League from Sky were shown free of charge in a live stream. There were highlights broadcasts on Sky, on ORF and on oe24.tv. LAOLA1 also offered highlights of the games on its website.

In the 2019/20 season, twelve clubs competed against each other in 22 rounds for the second time after the 2018/19 season. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. Then the best six teams came into the championship group and the remaining six into the qualification group; the points from the basic round were halved. Half points were rounded down. If two clubs were tied at the end of the final round and one of these clubs rounded down half a point, that club was ranked first. If neither or both clubs were rounded down, the goal difference would have been used as the next decision criterion. If this had also been the same, the other four existing decision criteria would be used.
This was followed by a Europa League playoff for places 4 and 5 in the championship group and for the winner of the qualification group, in which the last European Cup starting place was played out.
Due to the European Cup results of the Austrian teams in the 2018/19 season, Austria finished 12th in the UEFA five-year ranking at the end of the season . Thus, two starting places for the Champions League and three starting places for the Europa League were played out via the Bundesliga and the ÖFB-Cup in the 2019/20 season. The Bundesliga champion started in the play-off, the runner-up started in the second qualifying round; the cup winner was eligible to start in the UEFA Europa League , the third and the winner of the Europa League playoff played in the qualification for this.
The last placed in the top division had to relegate to the 2nd division.
Yellow cards and bans from yellow, yellow-red and red cards were taken from the basic round to the finals. Between the final round and the play-off games, only bans for yellow-red or red cards remained. The bans due to yellow cards or the number of yellow cards were deleted after the final round, i.e. no yellow bans were possible in the play-off games. This was supposed to ensure that the clubs were able to play with the best possible teams in the play-offs.
The three games on Saturday each started at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, there were two more games at 2:30 p.m. and one game at 5:00 p.m. from September. In July and August all Sunday games started at 5:00 p.m.

Master group
FC Red Bull Salzburg won the championship group.
On May 28, 2020, before the start of the placement rounds, LASK was initially deducted six points from Senate 1 of the Austrian Bundesliga for violations of the basic idea of fair play . During the interruption of game operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team held four team training units with physical contact at a time when only small group training was allowed. The association appealed the penalty appeal one, after which it was reduced to a deduction of four points.

Europa League playoffs
The last European Cup starting place is awarded in the Europa League playoffs. First of all, the winner of the qualification group met the runner-up in the qualification group in a home game on July 8, 2020. The winner of this game then played in a return match on July 11th and 15th against the fifth placed in the championship group. The winner of this game then starts in the 2nd qualifying round (cup winners and pursuer path) of the UEFA Europa League 2020/21 . The runner-up in the qualification group moved up after FC Red Bull Salzburg had won the ÖFB Cup and qualified for at least the group stage of the Europa League through the league.

Clubs of the 2nd league 2019/20 |
The 2nd league is the second highest division in Austrian professional football and was played for the 45th time in the 2019/20 season. Upper Austria provided four teams, Styria three. Lower Austria, Vienna and Vorarlberg two each. Tyrol, Salzburg and Carinthia were each represented by one team. Burgenland did not provide a team in the 2019/20 season.
mode
In the 2019/20 season, 16 teams took part in the match. Each team played once at home and away against every other team.
The league champion rose to the Bundesliga. The teams in ranks 14, 15 and 16 should have been relegated to the respective regional league. Due to the lack of interest of the regional league clubs in promotion, 14th place was declared a non-relegation place, as were places 15 and 16 after the regional league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So there was no relegation.
table
FC Liefering, FC Juniors OÖ and Young Violets Austria Wien would not be eligible for promotion as second teams or farm teams of Bundesliga clubs even if they won the championship.

Third performance level - regional league
mode
The regional leagues east and middle form the third level in Austrian football. The Regionalliga Ost is formed by the clubs of the Vienna , Lower Austria and Burgenland Football Associations . The Regionalliga Mitte is made up of clubs from the Upper Austrian , Carinthian and Styrian football associations . After the 2018/19 season, the Regionalliga West was abolished; from the 2019/20 season onwards, the two best clubs in the Salzburg , Tyrol and Vorarlberg football associations will form an elite league in spring and should have played there for promotion to the second division. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all amateur football competitions were canceled in April 2020.

Regionalliga West
In the Regional League West, two qualifiers for a play-off were determined within the regional league in Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg in autumn. This play-off will be played in spring 2020, the first place should have been promoted to the 2nd division in 2020/21. The remaining clubs should have played in the respective elite league in the respective federal states to remain in the elite league. No club from the Elite League West applied for admission to the 2nd division, so there would have been no promoted team anyway.
