Süper Lig 2018/19

The Süper Lig 2019/20 (officially: Süper Lig Cemil Usta Sezonu ) was the 62nd season of the top Turkish league in men's football . It started on August 16, 2019 with a home game of the promoted Denizlispor against the defending champion Galatasaray Istanbul and was originally supposed to end on May 16, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the season ended late on July 26, 2020.

In memory of defender Cemil Usta , who died in 2003 , the Turkish Football Association decided on June 27, 2019 to name the 2019/20 season Süper Lig Cemil Usta Sezonu .

With the decision of the TFF on July 29, 2020, Yeni Malatyaspor , MKE Ankaragücü and Kayserispor did not have to relegate to the TFF 1st Lig .

Game operations during the coronavirus pandemic

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic , the TFF initially did not cease playing, unlike almost all other European leagues. The games of the 26th match day took place without spectators, afterwards on March 19, 2020 the season of the Süper Lig was interrupted until further notice. Several players, including goalkeeper Fernando Muslera , who plays for Galatasaray Istanbul , had previously criticized the continuation of the game. On June 12th, game operations were resumed on the 27th matchday.

Attendees

For the 2019/20 season, the 15 clubs remaining from the previous season were joined by the three promoted clubs from the last second division season . As the second division champion, Denizlispor rose and returned to the Süper Lig after nine years. As a runner-up in the TFF 1. Lig, Gençlerbirliği Ankara also made it back to the Süper Lig. The third and final climber was the playoff winner Gaziantep FK . Newcomer Gaziantep FK was the 72nd participant since the founding of the Süper Lig.

1In June 2020, Trabzonspor was banned from European club competitions for one season by the judicial chamber of UEFA's financial control after violations and non-compliance with the terms of the agreement of May 2016 against financial fair play (FFP - club licensing) . This applies to the next two seasons, for which they would qualify athletically. In the same month Trabzonspor appealed against the UEFA exclusion decision to the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) .
