Eljero George Rinaldo Elia (born February 13, 1987 in Voorburg ) is a Dutch football player . He is mostly used in left midfield and plays for Istanbul Başakşehir . He was a member of the Dutch national team until 2013 and was runner-up in 2010.

Beginnings in the Netherlands

Elias parents are from Suriname . As a child, he had played for several small clubs in his native Voorburg , before moving to the youth department of ADO Den Haag in 1996 . From 2000 to 2002 he played for the youth teams of Ajax Amsterdam . In 2002 he returned to ADO Den Haag. At the end of the 2003/04 season he made his debut in the first team and was part of the professional squad from the 2004/05 season. After ADO Den Haag had only finished last in the Eredivisie in the 2006/07 season and was relegated to the Eerste Divisie , Elia moved to FC Twente . In the 2007/08 season he made his debut under coach Fred Rutten in the home game on August 26, 2007 against FC Utrecht . At the end of the season he had hit the opponent's goal twice in 30 appearances and was fourth in the table with Twente. After NAC Breda and Ajax Amsterdam were defeated in the play-offs, Twente qualified for the qualifying round for the Champions League . There the Enscheder were subject to Arsenal .

Under coach Steve McClaren , he improved his goal scoring in the following season : As a regular in the storm, he scored nine goals in 34 league games, four goals in five games in the KNVB Cup . In eight matches in the European competitions, he came to another hit. In 2009 he was chosen as the best young player in the Eredivisie.

Hamburger SV

For the 2009/10 season he moved to the German Bundesliga club Hamburger SV . He made his Bundesliga debut on August 9, 2009 against SC Freiburg , and scored his first goal in the third game on August 23, 2009 against VfL Wolfsburg . On matchday 16, he scored two goals in a 4-0 win over 1. FC Nürnberg ; the 1-0 goal was voted Goal of the Month in December 2009.

In his debut season Elia scored five goals for HSV in the first half of the season and prepared seven more goals.

Juventus Turin

On August 31, 2011 Elia moved to the Italian record champions Juventus Turin in Serie A and signed a four-year contract. Juventus were Italian champions again after a long time, but Elia shuttled between bench and grandstand under coach Antonio Conte . Overall, he ran five times in the league and cup for the Turin team - playing time: 107 minutes. He stayed without a goal.

Werder Bremen

On July 10, 2012, Elia moved to the German Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen for a transfer fee of 5.5 million euros . He signed a four-year contract until June 30, 2016. He was on the starting line-up in every competitive match in the first half of the season. He scored a goal in the 2: 4 defeat against third division team Preußen Münster in the DFB Cup . In the Bundesliga he gave two assists, and overall his performance was not as good as hoped.

Due to a night drive at high speed together with his teammate Marko Arnautović , Elia was temporarily suspended from play and training by the club on April 26, 2013.

In the 2013/14 season , Elia showed consistent performances and scored two goals against 1. FC Nürnberg on matchday 7. This season he came to 33 of 34 possible Bundesliga appearances, in which he scored four goals and prepared as many.

Southampton FC

On January 1, 2015 Elia joined the English Premier League club FC Southampton on loan until the end of the season . The English had an option to buy. Elia scored his first two goals for Southampton in a 2-1 win over Newcastle United on January 17, 2015 .

Feyenoord Rotterdam

In August 2015 Elia returned to the Netherlands on a free transfer and received a two-year contract with Feyenoord Rotterdam . On June 28, 2016, he extended his contract term at Feyenoord until 2018.

Istanbul Basakşehir

In June 2017 he joined Istanbul Başakşehir .

National team

Elia played three games for the Dutch U-21 national team . He took part in qualifying games for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2009 , which the Dutch missed. He then belonged to the squad of the short-lived Dutch B national team. In May 2009, bond coach Bert van Marwijk appointed him to the senior squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Iceland and Norway . In 2009 he was appointed to the U21 squad for the Toulon tournament. On September 5, 2009 he made his debut in the senior national team . In the 3-0 win against Japan in Enschede he came on after half-time for Arjen Robben and prepared two of the three goals. At the game in Scotland four days later he scored his first goal as a substitute for the Oranje , the winning goal to make it 1-0. Van Marwijk also called him into the squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he was substituted on in six of the seven games - including the final against Spain  .
