Mehmet Topal (born March 3, 1986 in Malatya ) is a Turkish football player . His younger brother Ahmet Topal is also a soccer player.

Career

In the club

The beginnings of the professional career

Topal began his professional career with the then Turkish second division club Dardanelspor in Çanakkale . He made his professional debut in Istanbul in January 2005 at the age of 18 in the league game against Sarıyer SK . In the 2005/06 season Topal rose with his team in the third division.

Galatasaray Istanbul

In September 2006, Topal moved shortly after the start of the 2006/07 season for a transfer fee of one million euros to Galatasaray Istanbul . In the same month, at the age of 20, he made his European debut in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League against Girondins Bordeaux . Initially at Galatasaray under coach Eric Gerets , Topal was only a supplementary player, so he was toying with a move to the 2007/08 season .

In the following season Topal stayed with the club and hoped for a regular place under the new coach Karl-Heinz Feldkamp . However, since Tobias Linderoth , an experienced player in his position, had switched to Galatasaray, he only made short appearances in the first half of this season. In the second half of the season Linderoth was seriously injured and had to end the season prematurely. Topal got his chance and convinced. Due to his performance, he was rewarded with a nomination for the national team and an early contract extension until May 2013 on better terms. At the end of his most successful season to date, he won the Turkish championship . Three months later in August 2008 Topal also won the Turkish Supercup.

He made 126 competitive appearances in four years and scored six goals for Galatasaray.

Valencia CF

For the 2010/11 season , Topal moved to Valencia CF in the Primera División in Spain for around five million euros and signed a four-year contract. The first half of the season was unhappy for him. Due to numerous injuries, he was initially rarely used, but then prevailed and has been in the regular formation more often since the second half of the season.

In the 2011/12 season Topal scored the 1-0 winner with a long-range shot in the 100th UEFA Europa League game of Valencia CF in the sixteenth-final first leg against Stoke City . He reached with FC Valencia in third place in the Spanish Championship . In addition, they made it to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Europa League and were eliminated in both cup competitions against the subsequent cup winners FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid .

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

In early July 2012, Topal moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul for the 2012/13 season for a transfer fee of 4.5 million euros . He signed a four-year contract.

Istanbul Başakşehir FK

In the summer of 2019, after mutual agreement with Fenerbahçe, he terminated his one-year contract and switched to league rivals Istanbul Başakşehir FK .

In the national team

Topal went through the Turkish youth national teams of the U-19 to U-21, played a total of 15 games and scored one goal.

Because of his performance at Galatasaray Istanbul, the senior national coach Fatih Terim nominated him in early February 2008. He played his first international game for the Turkish senior team on February 6, 2008 in a friendly against Sweden at the age of 21 . Three months later, Topal was appointed to the squad for the UEFA Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was accepted as a regular player in the Turkish squad . He was one of the players who fully played all three group matches. After the group stage, the team was eliminated.

Style of play

Mehmet Topal is a 1.87 meter tall defensive midfielder who can play with both feet. He can play in both central defense and right midfield, but prefers to play in defensive midfield. There Topal cleverly puts the spaces tight; his primary strength lies in intercepting balls and initiating counter-pull. He also has a dangerous shot.

Because of his long legs, good ball control and quick steps, Mehmet Topal is called Spider by fans and the media .
