Académie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer

The French Académie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer ( Academy of Overseas Sciences ) is a learned society founded in 1922 whose main field of activity is the geography and history of Africa , Latin America , Asia and Oceania .

Founded in 1922 by Paul Bourdarie with the aim of investigating the specific problems with overseas countries, it was initially called Académie des sciences coloniales ( Academy of Colonial Sciences ). Since June 1957 it has been called the Académie des sciences d'Outre-Mer .

Its library contains over 70,000 works that provide important source material for the cultures of the former colonies and overseas areas. The Academy also awards prizes for overseas scientific studies.

Her motto is "Savoir, Comprendre, Respecter, Aimer" ( know, understand, respect, love ).

Note on the name

Outre-Mer (from French outre mer = beyond the sea) is also the name for the entirety of the feudal so-called crusader states , which were founded after the first crusade on the Levant , especially for the Kingdom of Jerusalem .
