Jean Dorst (born August 7, 1924 in Brunstatt , † August 8, 2001 in Paris ) was a French ornithologist .

Life

Dorst was born in Brunstatt, Alsace near Mulhouse , and studied biology and paleontology at the Science Faculty of the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1947 he became an employee of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle . In 1964 he succeeded Jacques Berlioz as chairman of the mammals and birds department. In 1975 he was elected director of the museum, but resigned in 1985 in protest of the government's reform plans for the museum. Dorst was a member of the Académie des Sciences , one of the founders and the second President of the Charles Darwin Foundation in Galápagos , President of the 16th International Ornithological Congress (IOC) in 1974 in Canberra , Australia and Vice President of the IUCN . Dorst wrote many popular science books on the behavior of birds, but also alarming works on the destruction of nature by humans, such as Nature in Danger (1966).

Dorst was one of the authors of the documentary Nomaden der Lüfte - The Secret of Migratory Birds (2001). However, he did not live to see the success because he died shortly before publication. This film is dedicated to him.
