Marin shows in his work the tensions, lack of transparency and aporias in representation and symbol theory . He thinks of the French 17th century together with the history of the development of modernity and thus illuminates modern ideas about signs, representation and power. In The Portrait of the King he starts from Pascal's theory of signs in order to be able to theorize at the same time the power of the sign and the signs of power. He also explores this relationship in La Fontaine , Racine and Perrault . In his turn to painting and its representation , for example through Poussin , Caravaggio and Philippe de Champaigne , one finds the same dialogue between classicism and modernism. Based on texts by Montaigne , Rousseau and, above all, Stendhal , Marin takes up the subject of autobiography, the production and representation of oneself, in Die Excommunierter Voice and L'écriture de soi . His perspective is reminiscent of that of Philippe Lejeune , but differs through more philosophical questions and a stronger emphasis on the paradoxical statements of the autobiographical genre. This sets Marin apart from his contemporaries and his structuralist predecessors. In From the Powers of the Image , which can be understood as the sum total of his work, he asks about the original power of the image. Following the deconstructivist criticism of the philosophical tradition, for which an image was always a weakening of being, Marin turned from the image of being to the "being of the image".

His influence can be seen among other thinkers such as Jacques Derrida , Hubert Damisch and Georges Didi-Huberman .
