Xavier Deniau

Xavier Deniau (born September 24, 1923 in Paris ; † March 29, 2011 ) was a French civil servant and politician of the Union pour la Nouvelle République (UNR), Union des démocrates pour la République (UDR) and Rassemblement pour la République (RPR) who was particularly committed to the Francophonie .

Life

During the Second World War he did his military service in the army and was awarded the Croix de guerre 1939–1945 for his bravery . After visiting the École nationale de la France d'Outre-Mer (ENFOM), Deniau entered the French colonial administration and worked as an administrative officer in the colonies of Indochina , Cameroun and Senegal . He then became a member of the delegation to the United Nations in 1955 and then from 1958 to 1960 technical advisor in the office of the Army Minister. He was then a member of the delegation to NATO from 1960 to 1962and in 1962 for a short time as Maître des Requêtes employee at the Conseil d'État .

In 1962 he began his political career in the UNR with the election as a member of the National Assembly . In this he represented the interests of the constituency of Loiret IV-Montargis for forty years until 2002 and belonged to the parliamentary groups of the UDR and RPR, the successor parties to the UNR. He was also a member of the Gaullist Mouvement Initiative et liberté.

In addition to his work as a Member of Parliament, he was also mayor of Escrignelles , a village with 72 inhabitants in the Loiret department, between 1965 and 2001 . Between 1968 and 1982 he also played a leading role in promoting the Francophonie as the first Parliamentary Secretary General of today's Assemblée parlementaire de la francophonie (APF).

In July 1972 he became State Secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Messmer and was until March 1973 commissioner for the French overseas territories , the so-called "DOM-TOM" (Départements et des Territoires d'outre-mer).

Between September 1981 and April 1983 he was also a member of the 1st European Parliament and during this time a member of the European Democrats Group .

For his services in politics and in particular for the promotion of the French language , he has received several awards and was among other things an officer of the Legion of Honor . In addition, he was a member of the Académie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer , corresponding member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques and various associations for the promotion of Francophonie such as the Ordre des francophones d'Amérique since 1978.

Deniau, older brother of the Commissioner for External Relations and Minister Jean-François Deniau , was the father of five children, including the diplomat François-Xavier Deniau.
