Martin Škrtel (born December 15, 1984 in Handlová ) is a Slovak football player . Škrtel mostly plays as a central defender .

Career

In his youth, Škrtel played at HFK Prievidza , where he started playing football at the age of six. He was also a good ice hockey player and could have made a career in the sport, but he decided to play football and soon moved to the Slovak first division club FK AS Trenčín .

Zenit St. Petersburg

In 2004 Martin Škrtel was signed by the Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg . On July 31, he played in a Russian cup game for the first time , making his debut for Zenit. Overall, Škrtel played 113 times, scored five goals for Zenit and helped them win the championship in 2007 .

Liverpool FC

On January 11, 2008, Liverpool FC and Škrtel agreed on a four-year deal, after having been courted by Valencia CF , Tottenham Hotspur , Everton FC , and Newcastle United . The transfer fee was estimated by the media at around six million pounds. He made his debut for Liverpool on January 21, 2008 when he came on against Aston Villa in the 70th minute . From the beginning, Škrtel played for the first time in the 4th round of the FA Cup , against the sixth division Havant & Waterlooville . By the Liverpool fans Škrtel was voted "Man of the Match" on March 30th, 2008 after preparing the 1-0 winner against Everton. Škrtel made five appearances for Liverpool in the Champions League . In the 2-2 draw with Manchester City on November 21, 2009, he scored his first league goal for Liverpool. In the game against Unirea Urziceni , which Liverpool won 3-1 on February 26, 2010, Škrtel suffered a metatarsal fracture in his right foot. On August 18, 2010 it was announced that Škrtel had prematurely extended his contract by two years until 2014.

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

In July 2016, Škrtel moved to Turkey to Fenerbahçe Istanbul.

Atalanta Bergamo and Istanbul Başakşehir FK

In summer 2019 he was signed by the Italian club Atalanta Bergamo and handed over to Istanbul Başakşehir FK within the same transfer period without a competitive game .

National team

Before Škrtel made his debut in the Slovak national team, he had played for the youth national team of Slovakia. For the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he was appointed to the 23-man final squad . For Slovakia it was the first participation in a World Cup as an independent nation. The 3-2 win over defending champions Italy , in which Škrtel was one of the outstanding players, reached the round of 16, in which they were eliminated against the Netherlands .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Slovak squad and was in the starting line-up in all of the team's games. He was one of the players who played all of the matches, including the lost round of 16 against Germany, over the full playing time.
