On March 20, 2005, at the age of 17 years and 237 days, he played for the first time in Italy's top division. In the game against Chievo Verona , coach Alberto Cavasin replaced Fabrizio Zambrella in the 65th minute . It was Hamšík's only first division game for the next two years. At the end of the season, the club rose as table-19. in the Series B from. Hamšík became a regular within two years.
For the 2007/08 season Hamšík moved to SSC Napoli , where he signed a five-year contract. On September 16, 2007, the midfielder scored his first goal in Serie A in the game against Sampdoria Genoa to 2-0 final score. In the same year he was honored as the second best footballer of the year in Slovakia behind Martin Škrtel . He also received the Peter Dubovský Trophy as the best young Slovak player. With nine goals after the end of the season, he was the top scorer of his team. He was also in the two following seasons.

In the 2011/12 season Hamšík played with SSC Napoli for the first time in the Champions League , from which they were eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual tournament winners Chelsea . In addition, Napoli won the Italian Cup this season : Juventus Turin were defeated in the final, with Hamšík scoring the goal to make it 2-0.
Hamšík stayed in Naples until the winter of the 2018/19 season , where he became a club legend: He is the record player with the most appearances in competitive games for SSC Napoli. For a while he was also the club's record goalscorer, trumping Diego Maradona , before Dries Mertens left him behind.
After a good 12 years in Naples, Hamšík moved to Dalian Yifang in the Chinese Super League in February 2019 .
National team
Hamšík played in various Slovak junior national teams. In the Slovak national team he made his debut on February 7, 2007 in the game against Poland . He scored his first goal for the national team on October 13, 2007 in the qualifying game for the Euro 2008 against San Marino (final score 7: 0). At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he was team captain and reached the round of 16 with the team.
At the 2016 European Championships in France, he was included in the Slovak squad. He was in the starting line-up in all games and played for the full 90 minutes in all games. In the 2-1 win over Russia in the second game, he prepared the first goal and scored the second goal himself. The team was eliminated in the second round against Germany .
In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , the Slovaks finished second behind England , but were the worst runners-up in the group but did not qualify for the play-offs of the runners-up and thus missed the World Cup finals in Russia. Hamšík was used in all ten qualifying games and scored two goals.
On October 13, 2018, he replaced Miroslav Karhan with his 108th international match as the record international player and on June 11, 2019 Róbert Vittek with his 23rd and 24th international goals as the record scorer in Slovakia. In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League , in which he did not miss a minute, the Slovaks managed only one victory in three defeats, so that they only finished third in the group of three with the Czech Republic and Ukraine . In qualifying for the 2021 European Championship , he scored three goals in eight games, but when they were third in the group they missed direct qualification. Since the two group opponents from the Nations League were able to qualify directly for the European Championship, the way through the playoffs is still open to the Slovaks. Here they have home rights against Ireland at a date to be determined and if they win the game between Bosnia & Herzegovina and Northern Ireland they have to play .
