The Coppa Italia is the national cup competition for football club teams in Italy . First played in 1922, it has been played among the 42 teams in Serie A and Serie B as well as another 27 teams in Serie C and nine teams in Serie D since 2008 . It is organized annually by the Lega Nazionale Professionisti , a sub-organization of the Italian football association Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) and is the second most important title in national club football after the Italian championship .

The winner will play against the reigning Italian champions for the Supercoppa Italiana in the new season and qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League . If the cup winner has also won the championship, the defeated cup finalist competes in the Supercoppa, while the starting place in the Europa League is awarded in the league if the cup winner has already qualified for the UEFA Champions League .

Juventus Turin is a record winner with 13 cup wins and a record finalist with 18 finals. The current title holder is the SSC Napoli .
