The FDGB-Pokal was the national soccer cup competition in the GDR . It celebrated its premiere in 1949 and - as in other sports - was advertised as a challenge trophy by the Free German Federation of Trade Unions (FDGB) . After reunification, the last edition was carried out in 1991 under the name NOFV Cup .
Competition mode and history
The teams from the two highest leagues in the GDR, Oberliga and Liga , were automatically seeded; other teams qualified through the cup competitions in the GDR districts . By the mid-1980s, the large number of league teams (60 in a total of five seasons) resulted in a large field of participants. Until 1975 there was no fixed final location, after that the final always took place in the Berlin World Youth Stadium until 1989 . In the 1970s and 1980s, the final was attended by between 30,000 and 55,000 spectators from all over the GDR. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , public interest declined noticeably, which was reflected in the last two finals in 1990 and 1991 with 5,750 and 4,800 visitors respectively.
The FDGB Cup winner was eligible for the European Cup Winners' Cup of the following season. If the cup winner was able to win the championship ( double ), the defeated finalist took his place. A total of three GDR teams reached the final in the European Cup Winners' Cup: 1. FC Magdeburg, FC Carl Zeiss Jena and 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . While Jena (1981) and Leipzig (1987) lost their finals, 1. FC Magdeburg was able to celebrate the only European cup win by a GDR soccer team with its victory in 1974.
Record FDGB cup winners with seven cup wins each are 1. FC Magdeburg , which did not lose a single cup final, and SG Dynamo Dresden , which made it into the final most often with 11 appearances. Hansa Rostock was the last FDGB Cup winner in 1991 .
