FDGB Cup 1970/71
The FDGB soccer cup was played for the 20th time in the 1970/71 season.
At the beginning of the competition there were the 23 games of the first main round. As in previous years, the 15 district cup winners, 29 teams from the second-rate GDR league and the two league relegated teams from the previous season 1969/70 were represented at it. The GDR league representative BSG Kernkraftwerk Greifswald had a bye. The game mode provided that after a draw after 90 minutes, the game was initially extended. If there was still no winner after that, the match was repeated on the opponent's place and, if necessary, extended again. If there was still a tie after 120 minutes, according to DFV-Regulations, the lower class team into the next round. If both teams belonged to the same division, a penalty shoot-out was set as the final decision.
In the second main round, the teams of the GDR Oberliga intervened in the competition. Chemie Leipzig , Sachsenring Zwickau , Stahl Riesa and cup defender Vorwärts Berlin were eliminated immediately. In the round of 16, the last district cup winners were eliminated with the second teams from 1. FC Union Berlin and FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. Of the four GDR league players still in the competition, only the BSG activist Schwarze Pump was able to qualify for the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over the upper division Wismut Aue .
Last year's finalist 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig was eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 defeat at FC Carl Zeiss Jena , as was GDR league team Schwarze Pump. In the final there was a pure dynamo duel, as both the new GDR champions Dynamo Dresden (3: 2 in Magdeburg) and BFC Dynamo (2: 1 over Jena) were able to make their semi-finals victorious.

Course of the game
The dynamo duel between the two teams from Dresden and Berlin found little audience interest in Halle's Kurt Wabbel Stadium, which was only a third full. The clear favorite was the SG Dynamo Dresden, which had already secured the GDR championship and with Sammer, F. Ganzera and Kreische could offer three current national players. The team pursued the goal of winning the double - championship and cup - for the first time in the history of GDR football. The Berliners had a disappointing season behind them, bobbed around in the lower midfield and couldn't hold a candle to their opponents in terms of player material.
But once again the old wisdom proved that cup games have their own character. The favorite from Dresden did not find in his game. His midfield strategists Kreische and Ziegler were uncompromisingly shielded by the Berliners Filohn and Rohde, and Rau was also unable to set any accents. So the Dresden strikers hung in the air and were in good hands with the Berlin defenders. Overall, the Berliners were more agile and had three good chances to score in the first ten minutes. But here and there neither team was able to actually shape the game in their favor, a general tension dictated the game.
So the first goal was not out of a combination. In the 65th minute, the Dresden Saxon shot a free kick from 25 meters directly at the Berlin goal, goalkeeper Lihsa couldn't control the ball, which Sammer, standing right in front of the goal, was able to push over the line. Even the equalizer in the 71st minute did not arise from the flow of the game, but from a penalty that Johannsen converted after a foul by Kreische on Filohn. Thereafter, Dresdners gradually succeeded in bringing a system into their game, Sammer and Dörner now put more pressure out of cover, so their wingers Riedel and Sachse got better. But on the other hand, too, the BFC had set up their defense well, in midfield Terletzki and Rohde always put their strikers in the limelight. So there was a balanced event until the end of regular time, but without a team being able to make a decision.
In extra time, the Berliners seemed to be on the road to victory, twice the substitute Lyszczan had it on the foot to decide the game in favor of the BFC. But finally, in the 118th minute, Sammer ensured that Dynamo Dresden lived up to its role as favorites. Geyer hit a corner in front of the Berlin goal from the right, Sammer hit the ball with a headbutt. Although Lihsa could still get to the ball with one hand, she jumped to the lower crossbar and from there into the goal.
The two coaches then commented on the game as follows:
- Walter Fritzsch (Dresden): “What I suspected happened. It was a typical cup final determined by battle. The task of picking up the trophy after the championship has tensed the team a little. The victory is happy. "
- Fritz Bachmann (Berlin): “I have only one complaint about my team that they didn't take advantage of the opportunities they had. Otherwise, the game went as we had imagined. We have restricted the Dresdeners in their radius of action and created the necessary goal opportunities, but we failed. " (Deutsches Sportecho June 21, 1971)
