FDGB Cup 1977/78
The 27th competition for the FDGB soccer cup was held in the 1977/78 season.
After a round of elimination with four GDR league players, the first main round faced 55 teams from the second-rate GDR league and the two league relegated teams from the 1976/77 season and the 18 district cup winners from 1977. Up to and including the second main round, all games were played in the knockout system, the pairings of the eighth, quarter and semi-finals took place with a return game. Tied encounters were extended and possibly decided by penalty shoot-outs.
After all district cup winners had been eliminated in an intermediate round with the exception of Motor Warnowwerft , the GDR Oberliga intervened in the cup events in the second main round . With Halleschen FC , Union Berlin , Chemie Böhlen , Sachsenring Zwickau and Wismut Aue , five league clubs have already been eliminated. Motor Warnowwerft also had to say goodbye to the competition.
Last year's finalist 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig was eliminated in the round of 16. Of the seven GDR league players who had reached the last sixteen, only Buna Schkopau , Motor Werdau and Vorwärts Stralsund were among the last eight, but they were all eliminated in the quarter-finals. Last year's cup winner Dynamo Dresden came back to the final, where he met the four-time cup winner 1. FC Magdeburg .

Course of the game
The 1978 cup final was a summit of GDR football in several ways. The SG Dynamo Dresden faced each other: five times GDR champions, three times cup winners and current leaders of the GDR Oberliga - and 1. FC Magdeburg: three times GDR champions, four times cup winners and then second in the Oberliga. There were 19 national players (Dresden 10, Magdeburg 9) on the pitch. In general, Dynamo Dresden, reigning champions and championship leaders, was the favorite. After a long series of injuries, the Magdeburg team only had the best cast together again in the final. Then the surprise: Not the highly traded Dresdeners determined the game, Magdeburg dictated the course of the game for over 90 minutes. Not only did they take the lead early after a header from their libero Manfred Zapf in the 8th minute, they also sparked a real assault in the direction of the Dresdner Tor, appearing dangerous 23 times in or in the opponent's penalty area during the game. In contrast, Dresden only had its first real scoring chance in the 74th minute through Sachse. While the Dresden playmakers Dörner and Häfner couldn't get their team's game under control and their teammates lost most of the duels, the FCM was straightforward, imaginative and fast. Ex-national player Otto Fräßdorf judged as a neutral observer even before the second half that Magdeburg would leave the field as the clear winner. After the break, Dynamo intensified its efforts to turn the game around, but the weakness of the storm faced a compact Magdeburg defense, from which Raugust, Seguin and Decker repeatedly initiated dangerous counter-attacks. Since the only shortcoming on the part of the Magdeburg team was a blatant exploitation of opportunities, it was ultimately a narrow victory. In conclusion, game director Prokop commented: “A good final. Not a vicious revenge foul. This meeting was also a worthy endgame from a playful level. There were many exciting goal area scenes. An attractive advertisement for good football. "(Volksstimme Magdeburg, May 2nd 1978)
1. FC Magdeburg won the FDGB Cup for the fifth time with their victory. With that, the trophy finally passed into his possession.
