The competition for the FDGB soccer cup 1975/76 was the 25th edition of this event.
Attendees
For the FDGB Cup competition 1975/76 89 teams were eligible to participate. They are composed of the 15 district cup winners, 58 teams from the GDR league and the two league relegated teams from the previous season and the 14 teams from the GDR league for the 1975/76 season.
course
Up to and including the second main round, games that were still tied after extra time were decided by penalty shoot-outs . From the quarter-finals to the semi-finals, the winners were determined in the first and second legs. After six GDR league teams met in the elimination round on August 16, 1975, the 15 district cup winners and 57 GDR league players played against each other in the first main round. After an intermediate round, in which the last four district cup winners were eliminated, the teams of the major league intervened in the second main round on October 4, 1975. FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and Wismut Aue have already retired from them. With Dynamo Dresden II , Vorwärts Dessau , Dynamo Eisleben and Stahl Brandenburg , four GDR league teams reached the round of 16 , but after the home and away games only Dessau progressed, which was then eliminated in the quarter-finals against Dynamo Dresden. Cup defender Sachsenring Zwickau also had to play against FC Vorwärts Frankfurt / O in the quarter-finals . The finalist of 1975 Dynamo Dresden found his master in the semifinals at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . Even the reigning GDR champions 1. FC Magdeburg had to admit defeat to FC Vorwärts in the semifinals.

Course of the game
The 25th FDGB Cup final took place three days before the end of the 1975/76 league season. At this point in time 1. FC Lok Leipzig was third, FC Vorwärts Frankfurt / O. in 12th place in the table. While the Leipzig team had so far reached a final three times without success, the Frankfurters were able to refer to two cup wins from their Berlin history, including in 1970, when Vorwärts Berlin defeated Lok Leipzig 4-2. In 1976, due to the current table constellation, the favorite role was clearly assigned to the Leipzig team from the start. The hero of the game was the 56-time national player Henning Frenzel, who has just turned 34. In his fourth cup final, he showed an exciting game and with his two goals just before and shortly after the half-time break decided the encounter almost single-handedly.
The Leipziger started the game immediately offensively. In the first twenty minutes, Frankfurt goalkeeper Kreutzer was tested three times with Leipzig sharp shots. With determination and passion as a runner, 1. FC Lok clearly dominated the game, while FCV acted too timidly, showed technical inadequacies and also failed in the counter game.
Frenzel's goals hit the army footballers at psychologically most unfavorable moments, so that their morale was broken after the 0: 2 at the latest. Forty seconds before the half-time whistle, Frenzel used a Sekora free kick that Frankfurt's Libero had missed. Three minutes after the restart, it was another Frankfurt mistake that led to the 0: 2. This time goalkeeper Kreutzer was unable to parry a Gröbner header and Frenzel was able to shoot the ball that ricocheted off the crossbar into the goal.
FC Vorwärts, already inferior in midfield, failed to turn the game around after conceding two goals. His players remained too immobile, behaved tactically unwise and were harmless in attack except for left wing Wruck. The forward players showed themselves to be more combative in the second half, but with Roth's goal in the 70th minute to make it 3-0, their rebellion was broken early.
