The BSG Stahl Brandenburg was a company sports association in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel . It was founded on November 20, 1950. Successful sections were soccer and handball, of which teams sometimes competed in the top division of the GDR . After the political change in 1989/90 , some sections were founded into new sports clubs, while the former BSG was restructured as a registered club into SG Stahl Brandenburg .

history

The BSG Stahl Brandenburg was one of the largest company sports associations in the GDR. At times over 2,000 members operated sports in the BSG of the Brandenburg steel and rolling mill . So there were more than fifteen sections at weddings. These included football , handball , rugby, rowing , canoeing , athletics , volleyball , billiards , chess , table tennis, bowling , badminton , gymnastics , weight training , boxing , wrestling and sailing . In addition, the BSG was affiliated with a marching band. The Stahl Brandenburg athletes were able to achieve numerous national and international successes. For example, the canoeist Birgit Fischer won eight gold and four silver medals at the Olympic Games , making her the most successful German Olympian in history. The footballers, who played in the league for seven years and even took part in the UEFA Cup in 1986, also became known nationwide. The handball players also played in the GDR league. In 1990 the BSG was transferred to the new legal form of a registered association . It continues to exist as SG Stahl Brandenburg.

The soccer section was the best known of BSG Stahl Brandenburg and was founded in 1950. By 1955, the BSG played in the fifth class district class. Since the football section of the BSG unit Brandenburg was dissolved, the BSG Stahl took over their starting place in the fourth-class district league . Just three years later, in 1958, Stahl Brandenburg was promoted to the third-class II. GDR league , but was relegated again after a year. After rising again and establishing itself in the third division, in 1970 promotion to the GDR league , the second division in the system of the GDR football association, was achieved . Steel quickly established itself there and was already runner-up in Season C in the 1972/73 season. As a result, however, the BSG was unable to build on this success and took lower places in the strong season C in the next few years. Only a change to season B from the 1979/80 season brought progress. The 4th place was achieved straight away. In the following two seasons, Stahl occupied fifth place in the table, with several teams fighting for second place in the relay behind the overpowering 1. FC Union Berlin . In addition, under coach Karl Schäffner , Stahl was able to sign several experienced players, especially Karsten Heine , who rose to midfield in the 1983/84 promotion season and played all games. Eckart Märzke , Christoph Ringk and Frank Jeske , who developed into the pillars of the steel elf, had been playing for a long time. In the 1982/83 season, the BSG won their season for the first time, but failed in the promotion round to the GDR Oberliga . This resulted in a change of coach. After five years of activity, Karl Schäffner was relieved of his position and Heinz Werner , experienced in the upper league, was hired . Before the 1983/84 season, Magdeburg striker Holger Döbbel moved to the Havel. Even with his 16 goals in league and qualification, after the relay victory, they successfully prevailed in the qualifying round.

For the following first league season , Stahl strengthened himself with other later top performers such as Eberhard Janotta , Jens Pahlke and Silvio Demuth , and with junior national player Markus Wuckel a talent matured in his own ranks. Also the access blocked for the league goalkeeper Detlef room was by influential advocacy of the Director General of the carrier operation stainless Combine Brandenburg , Hans-Joachim Lauck , brought on the Havel. Zimmer developed into one of the pillars of the new league club. The Havelstadt team ended the season tied ahead of BSG Stahl Riesa in eleventh place in the table. The decisive factor was the 1-0 home win against BSG Chemie Leipzig , a direct relegation competitor, on the third last match day. Just one game day later, Stahl was able to celebrate relegation, as Chemie Leipzig lost again and could no longer overtake Brandenburg due to his poor goal difference. With a home win in the last game against Stahl Riesa, they even passed the Elbe cities. The hallmark of the steel eleven was their home strength in the steel stadium, they lost only four of thirteen home games. Brandenburg was also quite high in the audience's favor, she had the sixth-best average of all top division clubs at home games. In the summer of 1985, after two successful seasons, Heinz Werner left for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and Peter Kohl , who had trained Stahl Riesa in the past season , was signed up. In addition, there were the departures of Karsten Heine and Markus Wuckel, who could not be adequately replaced.

Nevertheless, Stahl Brandenburg surprisingly ended the second league season in fifth place. Already after the first half of the season, in which they were in fourth place in the meantime, they were already in this place in the table. During the winter break there was an exchange between the BFC Dynamo and Stahl. The strong midfielder Michael Schulz was noticed by the capital city and also developed into a regular player with the series champions. In return, Bernd Kubowitz and Jan Voss were delegated to the Havel, whereby Voss in particular turned out to be reinforcement. After a rather weak start in the second half of the season with two defeats and two goalless draws, the steel eleven defeated, among others, 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and away Dynamo Dresden in the three subsequent games . Favored by game failures, the Havelstadters even found themselves in second place in the table for one game day. In the final accounts, the Brandenburgers were only separated from fourth-placed 1. FC Magdeburg by their poor goal difference and left, for example, SG Dynamo Dresden, against which the steel eleven won in both games, behind. The audience participation was high again, the BSG had the fourth best audience average at home games.

The fact that 1. FC Lok Leipzig became FDGB Cup winner as runner-up and thus started in the European Cup of Cup winners , fifth place entitled to participate in the UEFA Cup . On July 10, 1986 in Geneva, the Northern Irish representative Coleraine FC was drawn as opponents for the Brandenburgers for the first round. For the third league season, Stahl was able to hold the team together, but also did not announce any notable newcomers. Only Ingolf Pfahl von Stahl Riesa was able to sign a seasoned defender who soon developed into a regular. Added to this was the TSG Wismar with Timo Lange one only 18-year-old talent, but which should prove to be a gain also. The season started with three straight draws before the first win against FC Vorwärts Frankfurt 1-0. The participation in the UEFA Cup, where you first played away, brought variety. A respectable 1-1 was achieved at FC Coleraine, even taking the lead thanks to Eberhard Janotta . In the second leg, the steel eleven won 1-0 in the completely sold-out stadium in front of 18,000 spectators with a goal from Frank Jeske. In the second round, the eventual European Cup winner IFK Göteborg was drawn, which ultimately failed. Brandenburg lost the first leg 2-0, the second leg ended 1: 1 in front of over 15,000 spectators (goal scorer Jan Voss ). To make matters worse, Janotta and Ferl, two top performers, were injured in mid-October. Nevertheless, Stahl was able to assert itself well in the upper league and always moved between seventh to ninth place in the second half of the season. The season ended in ninth place in the table, in addition, they advanced to the semi-finals of the FDGB Cup , in which they lost 0-1 to Hansa Rostock, who had already been promoted to the upper league at that time .

Before the fourth league season, Stahl was only able to sign Uwe Schulz , who was experienced in the league, as a well-known newcomer . Nevertheless, the season 1987/88 should be the best season for the Havelstadters. However, the season did not get off to a good start, after four matchdays Stahl was in last place. Until the winter break, the team was almost only in two-digit positions in the table to end the first half of the season in ninth place. Stahl started the second half of the season with three wins in a row and was suddenly in fifth place. The first defeat in the second half was only on the 22nd matchday with 0: 1 in Magdeburg. The highlights of this back series were the home wins against Aue (5: 2), Dresden (4: 1) and Lok Leipzig (3: 2). With the winning goal against Lok at the last second, Stahl even indirectly intervened in the title race of the very exciting championship; a draw would have made the Leipzig championship leaders. In the end, the BFC Dynamo only became champions thanks to the better goal difference. In the end, Stahl Brandenburg placed fourth with the best second half of the season ahead of champions BFC and the best home record of 24: 2 points (11 wins, 2 draws) among all the top division clubs. However, this time it was not enough for participation in the UEFA Cup, as the DFV only had two starting places in the UEFA Cup and the cup finalist Jena did not finish the season on a UEFA Cup place. In the two following seasons, the steel eleven moved more in the lower third of the table. Well-known newcomers from the 1988/89 season were the future DFB national player Steffen Freund from their own offspring and, during the winter break of the same season, the Riesa goal scorer Jens Pfahl , who now played again with his brother Ingolf. A change of coach from Peter Kohl to Gerd Struppert in the summer of 1989 did not help the steel eleven significantly. Floating in danger of relegation, coach Struppert attacked his section management in March 1990 and switched to 1. FC Union Berlin, where he supported coach Karsten Heine, who was also under attack. The new and last coach of the soccer players at BSG Stahl Brandenburg was Eckhard Düwiger . Since Stahl, unlike other league clubs, had hardly any departures as a result of the political turnaround and could rely on a very experienced squad, the last GDR league season was completed in tenth place in the table. Thus, Stahl Brandenburg was in the NOFV-Oberliga, in the 1990/91 season which the future participants in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga should be determined. In the summer of 1990, the football section broke away from BSG Stahl and now played together with the handball division under the name BSV Stahl Brandenburg . The BSV reached the qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the season.

Handball

Stahlpalast, the former steel sports hall in which the league games were played

In the early 1970s, the Stahl company sports club formed a game community in the men's handball area with BSG Stahl Brandenburg and BSG Stahl Kirchmöser . The aim was to bundle strengths and financial resources. The strongest handball club in the Potsdam district at that time was the three-time cup winner BSG Chemie Premnitz . This syndicate rose in the 1972/73 season for the first time in the two-track handball GDR league, the second highest division. The BSG Stahl Brandenburg / Kirchmöser played in the North season. In the first season, she was able to stay in eighth place. In the following 1974/75 season, however, you had to relegate as bottom of the table again for three seasons in the third-rate district league. It was not until the 1978/79 season that men's handball was seen again in the second division in Brandenburg. After this promotion, the team established itself and was able to achieve some top placements. In total, Stahl subsequently played eight more seasons in the GDR league and was able to outstrip Chemie Premnitz for the first time in 1983. Second place behind the second team of SC Dynamo Berlin in the 1985/86 season was enough for the first promotion to the handball GDR league , the first division. The first league season 1986/87 was not very successful. After only one season, the relegation followed, after they came with three wins and two draws to ninth place in the ten league. After the immediate resurgence, however, the syndicate managed to assert itself in the league, which was enlarged to twelve teams in 1988. In the season 1988/89 they came with five wins and two draws on the tenth, in the following season 1988/90 on the ninth place in the table.

The women of BSG Stahl Brandenburg rose to the second-class league in 1967. Already in the first season 1967/68 they landed on the 3rd place of the season north. 1970/71, after four seasons, the team landed on the 9th, penultimate place in the table and rose again to the district league.

In 1990 the section with the footballers separated from the BSG and founded the BSV Stahl Brandenburg. The team played their home games in the steel hall .

rugby

Rugby field on the medical sports field

In the course of an international match between the GDR national team and the Romanian team on October 12, 1958 on the Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportplatz in Brandenburg's northern district , which was attended by more than 3000 spectators and in which the GDR had their only draw in their international history against the Romanians scored, a rugby section was founded at what was then Thälmannwerft. In 1959, the newly founded sports section of BSG Motor Nord, the company sports community of the shipyard, joined. Since the Thälmann shipyard closed in 1962 and the BSG Motor Nord Brandenburg was dissolved in this context , the rugby players had to look for a new home club and so joined the BSG Stahl Brandenburg. In 1975, Stahl's youth team won the GDR championship.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the medical sports field behind the then district neurological clinic was converted into a rugby field and has been the home of the section ever since. At that time, the team played in the first, the upper league of the GDR. Stahl Brandenburg achieved their greatest success in the 1987/88 season under the then coach Gerd Wendler, when they were second behind Stahl Hennigsdorf and thus GDR runner-up and established themselves as the top team. During this time six players, for example Torsten Busse , Helmut Busse and Silvio Wicht , were members of the national team . Two and a half years later, in 1990, the A-class under the coaching team of Holger Thomas and Reiner Hermann became the last master of the GDR.

Table tennis

At the beginning of 1950, sport-interested workers of the Brandenburg steel and rolling mill founded the table tennis section in the BSG Stahl Brandenburg. In 1964 the sports hall of the section on the Gördenbrücke burned out completely. Three years later, rooms in the former Opel canteen, today's sports hall on the Gördenbrücke, were put into operation. As a result, the section established itself and table tennis players from Stahl Brandenburg were among the best in the Potsdam district. This is how the greatest successes were achieved in the 1970s. In one season, the BSG even managed to win all individual and team titles in the district. In the junior area, Stahl Brandenburg was one of the top national clubs. Before the political turnaround, international games, GDR championships, district championships and performance class tournaments were also regularly held in Brandenburg. With the political change in 1989/1990, the table tennis section had around 85 members.

sailing

In 1965, BSG Stahl Brandenburg took over the successful sailing section of BSG Motor Brandenburg . In the same year it was possible to build on the previous successes. Hans Gauglitz and M.Städter, who won the GDR championship for Motor starting in 1964, won bronze medals in the H-dinghy boat class in 1965 and 1966 respectively . In 1971 and 1972, Hans Gauglitz and Hans-J. Hanitzsch runner-up in the same class. Second placed in the 20 m² dinghy cruiser E. Schleuss, Draeger and G. Meyer 1965 and in the 15 m² dinghy cruiser Hans-J. Hanitzsch and Hanitzsch 1978. In 1987 Hans-J. Hanitzsch with R. Hübner again on the silver rank in the boat class 15-m²-dinghy cruiser. There was officially a sailing community SG Berlin-Grünau / Stahl Brandenburg. The next year both raced for steel and won bronze.

canoe

The home race course for canoeists was the Beetzsee regatta course . Two boats from the canoe section won medals at GDR championships. In 1964 Knobba won silver for Stahl Brandenburg starting in the women's single kayak . In the same year she won bronze in a two- person kayak with Wildhiller. After the children's and youth sports school in Brandenburg closed in favor of the facility in Potsdam and there was a concentration of talents at ASK Vorwärts Potsdam , BSG Stahl specialized in canoeing for children and young people, with the aim of winning over possible sports greats for the ASK. For example, the multiple Olympic medalist Birgit Fischer von Stahl came to Potsdam. After the fall of the Wall, the canoeists in the WSV Stahl Beetzsee Brandenburg formed.

Boxing

Athletes in the boxing section won a number of national championships in the early 1950s. In 1951 H. Daberkow won gold in the light welterweight division . Conrad Gutschmidt won the bantamweight title in the same year. Three years later he was able to repeat his success in the light welterweight division. For the following season he left Brandenburg and joined BSG Stahl Riesa , where he was able to build on previous performances with further championships. He is not to be confused with the boxer Guthschmidt, who won silver starting in 1953 in the lightweight for the BSG Empor Brandenburg. The boxing section stayed with SG Stahl after the fall of the Wall.
