Athletic career

Märzke started his football career in his hometown. He played there for Lok Greifswald, Einheit Greifswald and the successor community BSG KKW Greifswald . At Einheit und KKW he benefited from the successful youth work, from which Helmut Hergesell and Lothar Hahn had already created young national players and top division regulars at Hansa Rostock. Märzke also made the leap from the junior team at KKW Greifswald to the GDR junior national team in 1970, in which he was deployed a total of 13 times until 1971. At the age of 17 he was used on September 27, 1970 in the GDR league team of Greifswald.

On November 1, 1970, Märzke moved to the GDR upper division Hansa Rostock. There, too, he was first used in the 2nd team playing in the GDR league. It was not until December 18, 1971 that he came on the 11th matchday of the 1971/72 season in the encounter between Hansa Rostock and 1. FC Lok Leipzig (0-0) as a central defender for his first league appearance. He ended the season with a total of seven league games. A year later he had already won a regular place in the league team with 17 appearances. In 1973, Märzke was added to the junior national team. By 1974 he played five youth internationals. On October 26, 1976 he was used in the B international match GDR - Bulgaria (0: 1) as a midfielder. In the 1975/76 and 1977/78 seasons Marchke had to compete in the second-rate GDR league after the Hanseatic League had been relegated. When Rostock was relegated for the third time with Märzke in 1979, he began again in the GDR league in August 1979. In November 1979 he was called up for military service and after that he did not return to Rostock. In the past nine years, the 1.70-meter tall defender and midfielder had played 94 first division games in six league seasons and 45 second division games in two and a half GDR league series and scored a total of eight goals.

After completing his military service, Märzke registered with the GDR league club BSG Stahl Brandenburg in January 1981. In 1984 he was able to celebrate promotion to the league with the Havelstadt team. After 99 GDR league games, Märzke came 59 times in three seasons in the league from 1984 to 1986 (one goal). He also played four UEFA Cup games . He then ended his competitive sports career at the age of 34.

He ended his career at Motor Ludwigsfelde (January 1987 - June 1989) and Chemie Premnitz (July 1989 - June 1991). From 1991 he worked as a trainer at the Brandenburger BSC Süd 05 and worked there until spring 2004, at the same time as a manager. This was followed by engagements at SV Schwarz-Rot Neustadt (Dosse) (July - November 2004), SV Lichtenberg 47 (December 2004 - March 2005), FC Stahl Brandenburg (April 2005 - June 2006) and Torgelower SV Greif (July 2006 - August 2008).
