The development of FC Greif goes back to the end of the 19th century . On November 4, 1890 , the Torgelow gymnastics club was founded in what was then almost 3,000 inhabitants. The club derives its name “Greif” from FC Greif Torgelow , which was founded in 1919 and is a pure football club. In 1931 the TV Torgelow was split up into the German Gymnastics Association and the Free Gymnastics Association, after which the Free Gymnastics Association also ran a football team. It was renamed Rot-Sport Torgelow in 1933 , but was banned by the National Socialists in 1933.

After the Second World War , Directive No. 23 of the Allied Control Council of the Occupying Powers banned all sports clubs from 1946 . In East Germany , sports competitions were initially only allowed to take place with loosely organized sports communities at a narrowly limited local level. The Torgelow sports club was founded in Torgelow on February 26, 1946 . From 1948 , the sports operation in East Germany was reorganized on the basis of company sports associations (BSG). The ironworks located in Torgelow took over the SG as the future sponsoring company and converted it into BSG Stahl Torgelow in 1951 . From 1952 to 1956 the BSG was now called "Motor", at the end of 1963 it took on the name "BSG Nord Max Matern Torgelow" to refer more clearly to the carrier company VEB Gießerei und Maschinenbau "Max Matern". However, the short version BSG Nord Torgelow soon caught on in public.

When, after the German reunification in 1990, the changed economic conditions and the continuation of the company sports community system could no longer be maintained, members of the previous BSG North founded a civil association called Torgelower Sportverein Greif on July 1, 1990.

On July 1, 2010 , the Torgelower FC Greif merged with the Bundesliga club FC Vorwärts Drögeheide . This resulted in the takeover of all members, the divisions (football) and the women's sports group of FC Vorwärts in Torgelower SV Greif. The 1st team of FC Vorwärts Drögeheide thus provided the 2nd team of TSV Greif from the 2010/11 season. However, the sports facility in the Torgelow district of Drögeheide remained a sporting home.

After the third team was dissolved in 2011 and the second team in 2013 for economic reasons, TFC Greif has registered a second team again with the Vorpommern-Greifswald district football association for the 2015/16 season.

Development of the sport of football

Although there were temporarily three football clubs in Torgelow before the Second World War with FC Greif, Rot-Sport and VfB Torgelow, which was founded in 1921, Torgelow football never got beyond regional importance. In contrast, SG Torgelow played the final of the Western Pomerania Championship as early as 1947 , but was defeated by SG Greifswald in the two finals with 1: 5 and 0: 3. In the 1947/48 season, the SG was represented in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional class , at that time one of the highest football leagues in East Germany. After 6th place in the eastern season, Torgelow rose at the end of the season.

When the third-rate district leagues were set up in the GDR football business in 1952 , BSG Motor was one of the first teams in the Neubrandenburg district league . She also caused a sensation when she made it to the round of 16 in the GDR Cup competition and only there was defeated 1: 2 by the league club Einheit Pankow . In the following years Torgelow, starting in 1956 as BSG Stahl, always achieved top places in the district league. In the 1960 season, the BSG landed in first place in the eastern relay, but lost in the final of the Lok Waren district championship in two games with 0: 2 and 1: 1. In 1966 Torgelow won the district soccer cup after a 2-0 victory over Post Neubrandenburg.

In the 1970/71 season, a second place behind Vorwärts Neubrandenburg was enough to move up together with the army team in the GDR league expanded to five seasons . While in the first year of the game, now as BSG Nord Torgelow, with 9th place, it was only possible to secure relegation, it was only enough for 10th place in 1972/73, which meant relegation to the district league. After two more years in the third division, Torgelow won the Neubrandenburg district championship in 1975 and returned to the GDR league. Then the story repeated itself, two years in the second division, two years in the district league, then in 1979 again winning the district championship and again trying to establish itself in the GDR league.

With the Torgelow veteran and team captain Klaus Brackrock, who had already played almost 400 games for BSG at the age of 39, and Bodo Sommer , who had played 45 top division games for 1. FC Magdeburg and was twice GDR champion there, the BSG Nord in the summer of 1979 in their fifth GDR league season. In the end, it was the worst performance Torgelow had ever made in the second highest division. There was only one victory in the 22 games, the goal difference was 14:72. With only 4 points Torgelow landed far behind on the last place in the table.

In 1984, Nord Torgelow was again district champion, but failed in the now necessary round of promotion to the GDR league with four defeats and 1:16 goals. Until the end of the GDR football operation, Torgelow remained in the district league Neubrandenburg, where the team was usually able to place in the upper third of the table.

The last regional league season according to the GDR system ended with the team now playing as SV Greif in 7th place. That was only enough for the integration into the then fifth class district league East. There succeeded in 1994 the rise in the national league, which a year later in the Verbandsliga opened and where the SV Greif spent the next eleven seasons. In 2004 the team reached the state cup final, but lost 1: 2 to the six-time cup winners FC Schönberg 95 . In the 2004/05 season the Torgelow state champions were Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and were promoted to the Oberliga Nordost , which has been fifth class since 2008. In the 2008/09 season the club experienced sporting ups and downs. In the Oberliga they only finished 14th in the table, which would have meant relegation to the regional league. However, due to the fact that FSV Bentwisch waived the start , the Torgelower team was also allowed to compete in the league in the 2009/10 season. With a 4: 3 win over TSG Neustrelitz , however, they won the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Cup in 2009, so that SV Greif was qualified for the first main round of the 2009/10 DFB Cup . There the club was drawn from the second division Alemannia Aachen , which they lost 4-1. In 2010 SV Greif won the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Cup again . He was thus qualified for the first main round of the 2010/11 DFB Cup , where the Bundesliga club Hamburger SV was drawn. The team from Torgelow lost the game 1: 5 and was eliminated from the cup.

In the 2010/11 season, the club won the championship of the Oberliga Nordost for the first time, but for economic reasons decided not to move up to the Regionalliga Nord . The promotion succeeded in the following season 2011/12, when in the relegation of the representatives of the southern season, VfB Fortuna Chemnitz , could be defeated in the second leg after extra time.

In May 2013, the association had to file for bankruptcy due to an economic crisis. At this point the relegation from the Regionalliga Nordost was already certain. In 2015 it was announced that the bankruptcy was averted.

In May 2014, the state football association Mecklenburg-Vorpommern confirmed that TSV Greif will be re-established under the name "Torgelower FC Greif eV" from the 2014/15 season. All departments of the club will keep their current divisions.

In 2017, the Torgelower team were again national champions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for the second time after 2005 and were promoted to the Oberliga Nordost.

Daniel Pankau (36th) achieved the interim equalization to 1: 1 for the brave fifth division team.

The Aacheners missed a possible early decision in the initial phase. For almost 20 minutes, the favorite lived up to its role against initially fearful hosts. But the Alemannia did not succeed more than the 1-0 lead by Szukala (6th). Only after a warning sign from Torgelower through the lively Pankau (19th) did the league club wake up and was an equal opponent until the break whistle. The Alemannia responded to the deserved equalization by Pankau shortly before halftime with the renewed opening goal.

The preliminary decision was made ten minutes after the restart when Nemeth used a penalty to make it 3-1. But even with the two-goal lead in the back, the second division owed a lot. Cup debutant Torgelow had to pay tribute to the pace as the season progressed.

Torgelower SV Greif - Hamburger SV

The Bundesliga club moved into the second round of the DFB Cup with a 5-1 win at the fifth-class Torgelower SV Greif. Ruud van Nistelrooy (34th, 65th, 67th), Paolo Guerrero (53rd) and David Jarolim (81st) scored the goals for the weakened Hamburgers in front of 8,000 spectators in the sold-out foundry arena. Daniel Pankau (43.) had marked the interim compensation for the upper division club from Western Pomerania.

In very good external conditions, the Hanseatic team, who had to do without Dennis Diekmeier (torn ligament), Heung Min Son (broken foot), Romeo Castelen (knee injury), Dennis Aogo (back injury), Piotr Trochowski (Achilles tendon irritation) and Marcell Jansen (flu), but to survive a moment of shock. Torgelow's striker Pankau ran completely unhindered towards the HSV goal in the second minute. Keeper Frank Rost prevented a deficit.

The 1,500 Schlachtenbummler from Hamburg had to wait a good quarter of an hour for a similar good opportunity for their team. Then Mladen Petric pulled a 25-meter free kick on goal, which Greif goalkeeper André Greulich steered over the bar (17th). Two minutes later there was this duel again, and this time Greulich was the winner.

After a good half hour, Torgelow's number one was also without a chance when van Nistelrooy dusted off from close distance to 1-0 for the big favorite. The joy about it did not last long. The lively Pankau shifted the shaky HSV central defense again and shot to equalize.

The goal was not the initial spark for a cup sensation, however, because Guerrero shot the seemingly unfocused Hamburger back into the lead with a free kick from 18 meters. Van Nistelrooy followed suit and robbed the brave hosts of their last hopes.

Stadion

In 1958, lottery funds were unexpectedly available for the construction of a new stadium, which of course made the Torgelowers, who are considered football crazy, very happy. An area for this was found on the outskirts of the city, only the forest had to be cleared and the area made expandable. After the usual voluntary work by residents and players, the venue was completed very quickly. A soccer field was created with a spacious running track all around. The athletics facilities (long jump, hammer throw, etc.) have also been thought of. So it is not a pure football stadium, but rather a multifunctional sports facility. For today's standards, spectator stands that rise quite gently were created, which extend all around, but are very simple. However, the view from all positions is quite good. Next to the small speaker tower are rows of wooden benches. The inauguration was scheduled for September 14, 1958. The district league season had already started and the home game against Lok Anklam should be the official starting shot. 11,000 spectators came to the game, it was hopelessly overcrowded. In the 1990s, another side court (hard court) was created, which is equipped with lighting and can thus be used for training purposes. There were no other changes (apart from the renovation of the small club building). And this is how this small but beautifully situated stadium looks like it did 40 years ago. Because the Spartakus Stadium is located in the middle of the forest, as in other comparable forest stadiums, it has good acoustics. At least if more than the usual 250 spectators are present at top games.

Logo "Foundry Arena" since 2007

The venue of Torgelower FC Greif is the foundry arena in the north of the city, which was called the Spartakus Stadium until 2007 . It is named after the iron foundry Torgelow GmbH . The stadium has an official capacity of 10,000 spectators and has a grass pitch & stone trusses for the spectators and a running track. At the inauguration of the stadium on September 14, 1958, 11,000 spectators attended the district league match between Stahl Torgelow and Lok Anklam (1: 1). Also in front of sold-out stands the GDR youth team played against Romania's youth on May 12, 1963 (1: 1).

Adjacent to the main square is an artificial turf pitch which, due to its size, is not approved for competitive play in higher divisions. This side square has space for 1,000 spectators.

On May 9, 2018, a new covered grandstand was inaugurated in the foundry arena for the state cup semi-final against FC Hansa Rostock.
