Mathijsen had his breakthrough after moving to AZ Alkmaar . Together with Tim de Cler and Kew Jaliens , he formed a defensive trio, which at that time also partially represented the defense in the Dutch national team . In its first season with North Holland, the club finished third and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup .
