Málaga Club de Fútbol , shortly Málaga CF and generally known in the German-speaking world as FC Malaga , is a football club from the Spanish Malaga . The first team plays in the Segunda División and plays its home games at the Estadio La Rosaleda .
history
The club emerged from the Club Deportivo Málaga , founded in 1904 , which in 1948 also secured the rights to the club name Atlético Malagueño in order to send its second team into the competition under this title. Atlético Malagueño is still today the name of the B-team of FC Málaga.
In 1992 CD Málaga went bankrupt , but was able to continue playing under the name Atlético Malagueño , as there was a separate license number for this with the Spanish Football Association. Since the financial problems could not be solved with this, however, a decision was made two years later at a general meeting to convert the Atlético Malagueño club into one of the sports corporations that had only been introduced two years earlier and to give it the name Málaga Club de Fútbol SAD .
Under the new name, the team rose to the Segunda División in 1995 and four years later to the Primera División . In the 2002/03 season, the club reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup after successes over FK Željezničar Sarajevo , Amica Wronki , Leeds United and AEK Athens . There the Andalusians only failed on penalties against Boavista Porto . Until relegation at the end of the 2005/06 season , Malaga FC played in the top division of Spain, the club's second team in the Segunda División. Both relegated to the Segunda División and Segunda División B at the end of the season . 2007/08 succeeded in being promoted to the Primera División.
On May 28, 2010 it was announced that Málaga CF had been bought by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani from Qatar for 25 million euros. In addition, the new owner also paid for Málaga's debts of around 70 million euros. During the 2010/11 winter break, Martín Demichelis and Julio Baptista were the first notable reinforcements under the new club management. In the period that followed, the club got more professional structures - mainly through the engagement of general manager Fernando Hierro and the Dutch national player Ruud van Nistelrooy . This had a signal effect and so other top players such as Santi Cazorla , Jérémy Toulalan and Joaquín moved to Málaga for the 2011/12 season . There were also plans to build the largest youth academy in Spain and a new stadium with a capacity of 60,000 to 70,000 spectators, whose name - as part of a promotion for the World Cup in Qatar - was to be Qatar Stadium .
The 2011/12 season finished the team in fourth place in the table, which entitles them to qualify for the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League . In the play-offs you could prevail against Panathinaikos Athens and moved into the group stage. In this one prevailed as group winners against AC Milan , Zenit St. Petersburg and RSC Anderlecht and defeated FC Porto in the round of 16 . The Borussia Dortmund team lost in the quarter-finals . Two goals conceded in stoppage time sealed the elimination.
For the 2013/14 season , Bernd Schuster succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as head coach. Javi Gracia followed him in the summer of 2014 . In August 2012 it was announced that club owner Al Thani had put the club up for sale. After the considerable investments in previous years, the money that had previously flowed regularly into the club's coffers suddenly stopped. Al Thani did not deny these reports. A short time later, manager Fernando Hierro resigned from his position. Al Thani has invested around 150 million euros in the club since it was acquired.
Forced sales of players followed because their salaries could no longer be financed. Santi Cazorla was the first player to leave the club, followed by José Salomón Rondón and Joris Mathijsen , among others . Through the transfer proceeds, the club was able to ensure the payments of the outstanding salaries for the other players.
In the wake of the economic problems mentioned, on December 21, 2012, UEFA banned Málaga FC from participating in the 2013/14 European Cup as part of the Financial Fair Play program . If the club does not qualify for the coming season, the ban applies to the next participation within four years. In 2018, the club rose to the second Spanish division, the Segunda División .
Youth work
FC Málaga opened a football boarding school in Chile , five football schools in the major cities of the province of Málaga and relies on an Andalusia-wide network of youth work, to which all Andalusian first and second division clubs are invited.
