Fernando Baiano (born March 18, 1979 in São Paulo , actually João Fernando Nelo ) is a former Brazilian soccer player .

Career

The 1.84 m tall center forward began his career with Corinthians São Paulo in São Paulo . He then played for Internacional Porto Alegre until 2002 and was active for Flamengo Rio de Janeiro in 2003 .

He then moved to VfL Wolfsburg , where he stayed until 2004. There he scored 11 goals in 22 games, two of them in his first game against FC Bayern Munich . He caused a sensation in the Bundesliga with his extravagant goal celebration after he pulled a black Jesus bandana out of his pants to put it on his head. During the summer break he flew home, where he underwent bilateral knee surgery without the knowledge of the club. As a result, his contract was not extended.

After half a season in Brazil with AD São Caetano , he moved to Spain in February 2005 for FC Málaga , where he scored nine goals in 17 games. Just six months later, Baiano went to Celta Vigo , where he scored 15 goals in 34 games in the 2006/07 season. In the 2007/08 season he played for Real Murcia , who had signed him for around five million euros. Baiano is the most expensive transfer in Murcia's history.

At the end of his first season, however, the relegation for Murcia was certain, so that Baiano moved to Al-Jazira Club on a free transfer. After a year, Baiano moved to al-Wahda within the Premier Division .
