Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 1998

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 1999 was the 43rd season of the Brazilian Série A .

Season course

The Série A started its new season on August 19, 1999 and ended on December 22, 1999. The championship was organized by the national association CBF . During the competition, all 22 Série A clubs met once based on a pre-season schedule. The best eight teams then met again in one game in a knockout round. The final was then in return legs. The two best clubs from the final table, including the results from the knockout games, qualified directly for participation in the international competitions.

At the end of the season there was a dispute over the relegation places. These were awarded according to a point system, which resulted from the results obtained from the 1998 and 1999 seasons. Accordingly, should have descended:

The clubs Botafogo FR and SC Internacional appealed against ratings from games against FC São Paulo . He had used the player Sandro Hiroshi irregularly in the matches. The sports court approved these objections and rated the games 1-0 for the opponents of São Paulo. As a result, the Botafogo FR managed a non-relegation place and the new rating resulted:

The SE Gama , who was thereby on a relegation place, filed a complaint with a civil court. This court found the SE Gama right. The FIFA ban but the CBF that the SE Gama was allowed to participate in the national competition, precisely because of this action and not a sports court had raised civil court. The situation was not resolved by the start of the next season. Then the Clube dos 13 agreed to host the competition for the year 2000.

After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The “ Golden Ball ”, awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Marcelinho Carioca from the champions SC Corinthians . The top scorer with 28 goals was Guilherme from Atlético Mineiro .

In the first round the teams ranked 9th to 16th were qualified. However, only to teams that did not relegate to the B series. This concerned the SE Gama. This allowed Gremio 18th to participate in the qualification as the next non-relegated. As last year's Copa Libertadores winner, Palmeiras was automatically registered for this competition. The starting place for the qualification of Palmeiras was therefore reassigned to the winner of a play-off between Sport Recife and Portuguesa.

In the second round , the winning teams from the first round and the teams eliminated in the quarter-finals of the championship knockout round were qualified.

The knockout round and the final were played according to the "best of three" rule .
