The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 1989 was the 33rd season of the Brazilian Série A .

Season course

The Série A started its new season on September 6, 1989 and ended on December 16, 1989. The championship was organized by the national association CBF .

1st round mode : The teams were divided into two groups. First all teams played against each other once. The top eight clubs qualified for the second round. The last three of the two groups were confirmed as participants in the relegation round.

2nd round : Now the clubs played against the clubs from the other group once against each other. The points scored from the first round were not lost, but were added to the game results of the second round. The two group winners qualified for the final.

Relegation round : Of the six teams, only five competed. The Coritiba FC had already been sentenced to a forced relegation. On the last day of the first round, the latter refused to play his game earlier than the other competitors. The game that was not started was rated 1-0 for FC Santos. Coritiba also received a five point deduction. In order to determine the three remaining relegated teams, all clubs met each other on the return leg. Again, the points scored from the first round were not lost, but were added to the game results of the relegation round.

Total table : A total table was formed from the results of all games.

After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The “ Golden Ball ”, awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Ricardo Rocha from São Paulo FC . Top scorer was Túlio with 11 goals from the Goiás EC .

final

The regulations stipulated that the club, which scored more points in the two legs, should become champions. The master had to achieve at least three points. The final participant CR Vasco da Gama already received an extra point when entering the final, because they scored more points in the qualification than the final opponent FC São Paulo . They also had the right to choose where the first leg should be played. Vasco chose São Paulo to play the second leg in their own stadium. Vasco won the away game, achieved three points with the additional point and thus became champions in 1989. The second leg was therefore no longer played.
