Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 1995

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 1996 was the 40th season of the Brazilian Série A .

Season course

The Série A started its new season on August 8, 1996 and ended on December 15, 1996. The championship was organized by the national association CBF .

During the competition, all 24 clubs of the Série A met once on a pre-season schedule. The best eight teams then competed against each other again in quarter-finals and semi-finals to determine the finalists. The final table including the results from the knockout games was used to determine the qualification for the international competitions.

After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The “ Golden Ball ”, awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Djalminha from SE Palmeiras . The top scorers were Renaldo and Paulo Nunes with 19 goals.

On May 7, 1997 the news magazine Jornal Nacional published recordings of telephone conversations made by a corruption system within the CBF. The voice of Ivens Mendes, President of CONAF (National Football Arbitration Commission) since 1988, was identified in a tape recording of a telephone conversation. In this phone call with the President of Atlético Paranese, Mario Celso Petraglia, it was apparently agreed that the referee would whistle for Atlético in exchange for a cash payment in the game against Vasco da Gama. The game was held on April 3, 1997 in Curitiba. Atlético won 3-1, with referee Oscar Roberto de Godoi dismissing striker Edmundo von Vasco. Another recording appeared to be about an arrangement with the President Alberto Dualib of the SC Corinthians.

On May 14, the House Committee on Education, Culture and Sport set up a committee of inquiry. Its work was never officially completed. There was also no final report, only a draft for it. There were only sporting consequences for Athletico Paranaense , who was the only one who could prove an advantage. The club received a deduction of five points for the 1997 season. This incident also led the CBF to the decision that the actual relegated teams of the season could remain in the league.
