The Goiás Esporte Clube , usually just called Goiás for short , is a sports club from Goiânia , the capital of the Brazilian state Goiás with around 1.2 million inhabitants , which is of national importance in the field of football. Goiás EC is the state's leading association and was founded in 1943. Since 1973, Goiás has been first class nationally with a total of only five years. In 1990 the club was in the final of the Brazilian Cup, the Copa do Brasil .

The brazil usual mascot is the Periquito, originally native to Australia budgerigar -Art. Common nicknames of the association are Verdão ("big green") and Esmeraldino ("small emerald ").

history

The Goiás EC was founded on April 6, 1943 in the Brazilian city of Goiânia in the state of Goiás when some friends met and decided to found their own football club. The brothers Lino and Carlo Barsi went down in history as the founding fathers who held the founding meeting at home.

The Verdão played their first game in 1944 in the Campeonato Goiano , the state championship of Goiás . The Goiás EC won this title for the first time in 1966. Since then, the association has established a dominant position in the state. By 2009 Goiás was able to win the state championship 21 more times, making it the record champion. The main rivals here all come from the capital and are Vila Nova FC , Atlético Goianiense and Goiânia EC, which is very similar in name .

Goiás took part in the Brazilian Championship for the first time in 1973 and has since been top notch with only a three-year break. The best placement was the third place in 2005, through which Goiás qualified for the only participation in the South American Cup so far, the Copa Libertadores . As the group first, the club reached the second round where the first leg at the Argentine representative Estudiantes de la Plata was lost 2-0. In the second leg, Goiás won 3-1 and was the historic victim of the first application of the away goals rule at the Libertadores. The advance into the final of the Brazilian Cup in 1990 was also a great success . Goiás lost 0-0 and 0-1 to Flamengo from Rio de Janeiro.

2010 Goias rose after uninterrupted League affiliation since 2000 as 19 out of the Series A from. In December 2010, the club played in the finals of the Copa Sudamericana . After a 2-0 win at home, Goiás lost 3-1 to CA Independiente, a suburb of Bonaren, and had to hand over the title to the Argentines after a 4-2 draw on penalties.

In the 2012 season Goiás EC was able to finish the second division season as champions with 78 points and rose again to the A series.

Goiás has been a member of the Clube dos 13 , an association of the most important clubs in Brazil , since 1998 .

Stadium infrastructure

Estádio Hailé Pinheiro

Estádio Hailé Pinheiro

The Goiás EC generally plays its home games in the club's own Estádio Hailé Pinheiro , which is usually called Serrinha . The stadium was built in 1995 and completely renovated between 2003 and 2004. It has a capacity of 9,900 spectators. An expansion of the stadium to a capacity of 33,000 spectators is planned.

It is part of a site that the club acquired in the 1960s and, in addition to the club, also serves as its headquarters. In addition to the stadium, the sports complex built there over the years also includes a sports hall with a capacity of 3,000 spectators, a covered 25-meter pool, a restaurant, 300 parking spaces and other playing fields.

Estádio Serra Dourada

The Estádio do Governo do Estado de Goiás , usually called Serra Dourada ("Golden Mountains"), is the largest stadium in Goiás and belongs to the state government. It was built until 1975 according to a plan by the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha , who was later awarded the Pritzker Prize . Originally the stadium held around 80,000 spectators, but modernizations, increased comfort and more security have reduced the current capacity to 50,000.

Goiás uses the Serra Dourado whenever the expected audience response justifies it. Local rivals Vila Nova FC and Atlético Goianiense also use the stadium.

Other facilities

The association also maintains the sports and leisure center Centro Esportivo e Lazer Edmo Pinheiro in Parque Annexuera and the Centro Coimbra Bueno in the Aparecida de Goiânia district.

Edmo Pinheiro, located on a lake, has four soccer fields, a gymnastics academy and a sports medicine department, as well as numerous leisure facilities. It is also the seat of the association's technical commission.

The Centro Coimbra Bueno with two soccer fields serves as a training center. Poor children from the south of the city are also looked after there.
