An overview of the participating clubs

Season course

The Série A took place from April 28th to December 8th, 2019. The championship was the League Mode discharged with home and away. At the end of the season, the teams were relegated to places 17 to 20 in the Série B 2020.

Match operations were suspended during the 2019 Copa América .

The video assistant has been used in Série A games since the 2019 season . The clubs bore the costs for the video referees themselves, while the costs for the technical equipment were borne by the CBF. On February 22, 2019, the CBF also determined that:

  • Number of players : The number of players registered per club could not be higher than 45. There was no limit to the use of players from the youth field. However, these could not be older than 20 years and had to have signed a contract with the club by December 31, 2018.
  • Stadiums : As in the previous year, the minimum capacity of the stadiums had to be 12,000 seats. The minimum price per ticket was also retained (40 reals for non-reduced tickets and 20 reals for reduced tickets).
  • Match ball : The match ball was supplied by Nike. It was the Nike Merlin 2019.
    Nike Merlin
On matchday 27 , the ball received a pink and white design and a pink ribbon as a logo as part of the nationwide campaign to prevent breast cancer .

On May 25th, the sixth matchday , the Botafogo FR received the Palmeiras São Paulo . The game ended 0-1 for Palmeiras. Botafogo protested the game's rating. The club saw an anomaly related to the video assistant (VAR) and a decision by the referee. After he restarted the game after a foul, he interrupted it again due to a tip from the VAR. The referee decided after viewing the video recordings in the 62nd on a penalty for Palmeiras. This led to the only goal of the game. After its meeting on June 18, the STJD announced that it had rejected Botafogo's proposal with 9-0 votes. The rating of the game remained.

The game between Corinthians São Paulo and Goiás EC was scheduled for the seventh matchday on June 1, 2019 . Due to the scheduling of the Corinthians games in the Copa Sudamericana 2019 , the meeting on May 14th was postponed indefinitely by the CBF. The game was played on August 7, 2019. It ended 2-0 for Corinthians .

The match between Athletico Paranaense and São Paulo FC for matchday 13 on August 4, 2019 has been postponed to August 21, 2019. The reason for this was Athletico's participation in the Copa Suruga Bank on August 7, 2019.

For matchday 16 on August 25, 2019, the match between Palmeiras São Paulo and Fluminense Rio de Janeiro was postponed to September 10. The reason was the quarter-final second leg in the Copa Libertadores 2019 between Palmeiras and Grêmio Porto Alegre on August 27. Since Gremio already played his league game on Saturday, August 24, the minimum period between two games was observed. The game of Palmeiras was scheduled for the 25th, so the gap of at least 72 hours could not be kept.

For the 17th matchday , international matches took place on September 6th and 11th. The game was not interrupted for this.

Due to the semi-final second leg in the Copa Sudamericana 2019 , the games from matchday 21 between Chapecoense and Corinthians São Paulo and between Atlético Mineiro and CR Vasco da Gama have been postponed to October 2, 2019.

For the 24th matchday and 25th matchday , international matches took place on October 10th and 13th. The game was not interrupted for this. Likewise for the 33rd matchday . After the 33rd matchday, Avaí FC was the first to be relegated.

The game between Flamengo Rio de Janeiro and CR Vaso da Gama from the weekend of November 23rd to 25th was presented for the 34th matchday . The reason for this was Flamengo's participation in the final of the Copa Libertadores 2019 on November 23. At the end of the day of the match, Flamengo was confirmed ahead of time as champions.

On the last day of the game it was decided that Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte had to relegate to the Série B for the first time . The club's last game against Palmeiras São Paulo in Belo Horizonte was called off in the 84th minute by the referee. In the stadium there were massive riots by the fans of Cruzeiro. With the relegation of Cruzeiro, Flamengo became the only club that has continuously participated in the Série A since the introduction of the championship mode in 1971. Flamengo's 90 points in the season represent a high since the 2003 championship , which at that time was still held with 24 clubs.

Qualification for other competitions

The master Flamengo qualified to participate in the Supercopa do Brasil . In addition, the best six clubs from the Liga plus Flamengo as title winners of the Copa Libertadores 2019 and Athletico Paranaense as the winner of the Copa do Brasil 2019 will be eligible to start the Copa Libertadores 2020 . Places nine to fourteen will take part in the Copa Sudamericana 2020 .
