Construction of the stadium

The Estádio São Januário in Rio de Janeiro, the second largest city in Brazil with six million inhabitants and located in the south of the country, was built in 1926 and 1927 and on April 27, 1927 in front of the eyes of Brazil's President Washington Luís Pereira de Sousa with a The game opened by CR Vasco da Gama against FC Santos , which the guest won 5-3. With a capacity of around 40,000 spectators, it was the largest stadium in the New World when it was built. In 1930 the Estadio Centenario was built on the occasion of the Soccer World Cup in Uruguay and from then on it was the largest stadium in South America with a capacity of over 70,000 . Ten years after the construction of the Montevideo stadium, the newly built Estádio do Pacaembu replaced the São Januário as the largest football stadium in Brazil. The São Januário was also the largest sports facility in Rio de Janeiro until 1950, before the famous Estádio do Maracanã was built. Over time, many large stadiums were built in Brazil and the Estádio São Januário lost its importance. Even today, 35,000 spectators can fit into the stadium, although due to safety regulations only 15,150 spectators are allowed in for games for the Brazilian championship or other national competitions. The record setting in the stadium was achieved when 40,209 spectators attended a game between Vasco da Gama and Londrina EC that ended 2-0 for the guests in 1978 .

The Estádio São Januário is owned by the CR Vasco da Gama football club. Vasco da Gama is the only bigger soccer club from Rio de Janeiro that has its own stadium, the others mostly use either the Maracanã Stadium ( Flamengo Rio de Janeiro and Fluminense Rio de Janeiro ) or the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange ( Botafogo FR ) which are both owned by the city. For games with a high number of spectators, Vasco da Gama will move to Maracanã at short notice. CR Vasco da Gama has been the Brazilian soccer champion four times in its history and won the Copa Libertadores once . In 1998 they reached the final in the most important competition for club teams in South America and met the Ecuadorian representative Barcelona SC Guayaquil . In front of 35,000 spectators, the first leg at the Estádio São Januário was won 2-0. After winning the second leg at the Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo in Guayaquil , Vasco da Gama won the Copa Libertadores for the first and only time to date. The club currently plays in the top Brazilian division of the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol .

In earlier times, the Estádio São Januário was also used politically. For example, the former Brazilian dictator Getúlio Vargas , who ruled the country for a total of nineteen years without a break, often gave speeches to the people here.
