history
The Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha was built in 1987 on the initiative of Isidro Romero Carbo , President of Barcelona SC Guayaquil. He wanted his own stadium for his club, which had previously played in the Estadio Modelo Alberto Spencer Herrera together with several other clubs. The stadium was opened on December 27, 1987. The first game in the new stadium took place between the team from Barcelona SC Guayaquil and FC Barcelona from Spain . The Spaniards won the game 1-0. Many famous South American football players attended this game, including Brazil’s three-time world champion Pelé , who considered this stadium to be one of the most beautiful in the world.
Se o Maracanã é o maior estádio do mundo, o Monumental é um dos mais belos.
"If Maracanã is the largest stadium in the world, Monumental is one of the most beautiful in the world"
In January 2008, Barcelona SC President Eduardo Maruri sold the rights to the stadium to Banco del Pichincha, the national bank of Ecuador, as this would bring some money into the club's coffers. Since then, the stadium has its current name, Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha , after it was previously named after its builder, Isidrio Romero Carbo, and was called Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo .
The Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha has been used by the Barcelona SC Guayaquil association since 1987 . Barcelona SC have been Ecuadorian champions 13 times, making them the country’s record champions. The club also won the Guayaquil Supercup five times, in which the teams from Guayaquil determine a city champion. Barcelona SC also reached the final of the Copa Libertadores twice , but they failed both in 1990 against Club Olimpia from Paraguay and in 1998 against CR Vasco da Gama from Brazil . Many national competitions have also taken place in the Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha. Among other things, four matches of the Copa América 1993 , which Ecuador was able to secure, were played in this stadium. The final, in which Argentina secured the title 2-1 against Mexico , also took place in the largest football stadium in Ecuador. The Ecuadorian national soccer team has also played numerous international matches here. This stadium was also one of the venues for the U-17 World Cup in 1995 , at which Ghana became world champions.
