In 1926 the Comité Olímpico Ecuatoriano (Olympic Committee of Ecuador) organized a national Olympiad in the city of Riobamba , in which football was on the program and for the first time teams of the provinces were formed. The host province Chimborazo won the tournament undefeated.

Also in 1926, Ecuador joined the world football association Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and in 1927 the South American football association Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CONMEBOL). National amateur championships were held for the first time in 1940 and lasted until 1949.

In the 1950s, the provinces of Guayas and Pichincha professionalized their championships: in 1951 Guayas hosted the first professional provincial championships and Pichincha took over in 1953. In 1957, a national club championship was organized in Ecuador and Guyas and Pichincha ended their independent professional championships. A national club championship did not take place in 1958 and 1959, but has been held annually since 1960. On June 30, 1967, the Asociación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol was founded and finally on May 26, 1978 the statutes and the name of the association were changed to Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol .
