The Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (abbreviation UP ) is the Uruguayan football association .
It was founded on March 30, 1900 as The Uruguay Association Football League by the Albion Football Club , Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club , Deutscher Fußball Klub and Uruguay Athletic Club on the proposal of Enrique Cándido Lichtemberger , one of the leaders of Albion. The model of the Football Association was used to create the association structure . The association's regulations were therefore also written in English. Percy D. Charter of CURCC became the first president . The first headquarters of the association was near the port of Montevideo at Calle Solís 15 in the local office of the insurance company El Siglo , whose major shareholder was Lichtemberger. In the period that followed, the association's headquarters changed several times. However, one always stayed within the limits of the Ciudad Vieja . In 1905 it was renamed Liga Uruguaya de Football . In 1915 the association was given the name Asociación Uruguaya de Football . With the re-establishment of the professional league on April 6, 1932, they also used the association's name from the amateur era, which had been established by then. On June 30, 1936, under the presidency of Raúl Judes, the Anglicism in the name was finally given up and the name was changed to the name Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol , which is still valid today . The association has been a member of CONMEBOL, which was founded jointly with the associations of Argentina, Brazil and Chile, since 1916 and has been a member of FIFA since 1923 . Since 2014 has Wilmar Valdez held the office of President of the UP.
Championships
Men
The championship in the top division of the UP, the Primera División , has been held in the usual European rhythm since the 2005 season, which includes a first half of the season (Apertura) in the second half of the calendar and a second half of the season (Clausura) in the first half of the calendar year of the following year. The question of the record championship is controversial. The two clubs, Nacional and Peñarol , based in the capital Montevideo, each have 44 and 42 officially recognized championship titles. The answer to the question of whether Peñarol's predecessor club, Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, with five championship titles, should be included in this calculation is of crucial importance.
The AUF is also subordinated to the competition of the second highest Uruguayan league, the Segunda División , which, like the Primera División, is designed as a professional league.
In addition, the part of the amateur section in Uruguayan football, which includes the clubs from the Montevideo metropolitan area, is organized by the AUF. This area is located in the Segunda División Amateur and in the Tercera División. The inland associations, on the other hand, are organized in the Organización del Fútbol del Interior (OFI), which is affiliated to the AUF but is independent .
Women
Since 1997, a women's soccer competition has been held annually under the umbrella of the AUF with the Campeonato Uruguayo de Fútbol Femenino . In addition, the AUF and OFI organized another competition in this area in 2001 and 2003 with the Torneo Nacional de Fútbol Femenino .
Juniors
A U-20 league competition is also part of the competition portfolio organized by the AUF.
Futsal and beach soccer
AUF also organizes futsal tournaments. However, there is another association in this sport with the Federación Uruguaya de Fútbol de Salón . There is also a beach soccer league (fútbol playa), to which ten teams belonged when it was held in 2010. Such a competition is also held for women. Women's champion of the year 2013 was antidoping after 7: 6 in the penalty shootout against the team from La Luz .
National team
The Uruguayan national soccer team was Olympic champion twice (1924 and 1928) and world champion (1930 and 1950) and is the record winner of the Copa America with 15 titles . She usually plays with black shorts, sky blue shirts, and black socks. Alternatively, the national team competes in white. Due to the basic color of the jersey, the national team is often referred to as the “Celeste”, the “sky blue”.
National stadium
The national stadium is the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo , which was completed for the Football World Cup in 1930 and has 74,000 seats (originally 100,000 seats).
