Hugo Batalla

Hugo Batalla Parentini ( July 11, 1926 - October 3, 1998 ) was a Uruguayan politician and vice president of his country from March 1, 1995 to his death on October 3, 1998 under Julio María Sanguinetti .

Batalla started his political career in the Partido Colorado and was a member of the Parliament of the Department of Montevideo from 1962 to 1971 . In 1971 he left the Partido Colorado to found the Frente Amplio with Zelmar Michelini . He continued to serve as an MP until 1973, when the military took power. After the end of military dictatorship in 1985 he was senator for the Partido por el Gobierno del Pueblo (the party later joined the Frente Amplio in) and remained so until 1995. In 1989, the nominated Nuevo Espacio to the Lista 99 associated Batalla as a presidential candidate. In the subsequent election, however, he only got around nine percent of the vote. From 1993 he was also Vice President of the Senate. For the presidential election in November 1994, he rejoined the Partido Colorado and became vice president after its election victory. He died of lung cancer on October 3, 1998 . Hugo Fernández Faingold was his successor in the office of Vice President .

In addition to politics, Batalla was the founder of the newspaper Hechos and the political magazine Zeta . He was also President of the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol from 1991 to 1993 and Vice President of the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol from 1992 to 1993 .

In 1953 Hugo Batalle married Hilda Flores and had a daughter named Laura.
