The Frente Amplio (FA, Spanish Broad Front ) is a left party alliance in Uruguay to which around 40 different parties and organizations belong. It was founded on February 5, 1971 . The former presidents of Uruguay, José Mujica and Tabaré Vázquez , were appointed by the party alliance.
The strongest member organizations are the Movimiento de Participación Popular , which emerged from the Tupamaros around Mujica , the group Espacio 90 , of which the Partido Socialista del Uruguay is a member, and the group Asamblea Uruguay , which, like the latter, also has a center-left orientation. The formerly strong Partido Comunista de Uruguay also belongs to the FA, which thus unites a large part of the left in the country from social democracy and from the left wing of Christian democracy to various organizations of the radical left.
