Fergus Millar
Sir Fergus Graham Burtholme Millar (born July 5, 1935 in Edinburgh , † July 15, 2019 in Oxford ) was a British ancient historian .
Live and act
The son of a lawyer attended the Edinburgh Academy and the Loretto School from 1943 to 1953. After military service in the Royal Navy studied Millar 1955-1958 at Trinity College in Oxford Classical Studies ( "Greats"). From 1958 to 1964 he was a Fellow of All Souls College , Oxford. In 1958, he received a doctoral scholarship from All Souls College. He received his doctorate in 1962 from Ronald Syme on Cassius Dio . In 1964, Millar became a Fellow and Tutor for Ancient History at Queen's College , Oxford, and in 1976 Arnaldo Momigliano's successor was Professor at University College London . In 1984 he returned to the University of Oxford when he accepted a call to the Camden Chair in Ancient History held by Ronald Syme and Peter Brunt . He retired in 2002.
Millar is considered one of the most important ancient historians of the 20th century. He dealt with numerous topics, especially Roman history , for example imperial administrative activities , the Middle East in Roman times, late antiquity (especially Theodosius II ) or the question of the role the people played in the constitution of the Roman Republic: Millar emphasized described the democratic elements of the system in a series of essays, thus triggering an intense debate.
Since 1987 Millar was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Millar received a D. Litt. From the University of Oxford in 1988 and the Kenyon Medal for Classical Studies in 2005 from the British Academy , to which he has been a member since 1976 . Since 1989 he has been an external member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences , since 1999 of the Russian Academy of Sciences and since 2003 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1991 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . In 2010, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the dignity of a knight and thus elevated him to the personal, non-hereditary nobility. Fergus Millar died in July 2019 at the age of 84.
