Thomas Warton

Thomas Warton (born January 9, 1728 in Basingstoke , Hampshire , † May 21, 1790 in Oxford ) was an English poet and literary historian.

Thomas Warton was a son of Thomas Warton the Elder (around 1688-1745), Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford . The poet Joseph Warton was his brother.

Thomas Warton received recognition as a poet at a young age. He was Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford. He wrote the for the English romance important History of English Poetry .

Warton had correspondence with Horace Walpole , Thomas Percy and Edmond Malone, among others . From 1785 he was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom .
