Alan K. Bowman

Alan Keir Bowman FBA (born May 23, 1944 in Manchester ) is a British ancient historian .

Alan K. Bowman attended Manchester Grammar School (1955–1962) and Queen's College (1962–1966) in Oxford. At Queen's College he obtained a Bachelor in Literae Humaniores (a degree with classical content, ancient history and philosophy). At the University of Toronto (1966–1969) received his Masters and Ph.D. Bowman was Assistant Professor of Classics at Rutgers University (1970–1972). From 1972 to 1977 he was Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Manchester , and from 1977 to 2002 University Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Oxford . From 2002 to 2009 Bowman Camden was Professor of Ancient History at Oxford and a Fellow of Brasenose College . In 1994 he became a Fellow of the British Academy . He has also been a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London since 1999 . It was in October 2011, succeeding Roger Cashmore Director (Principal) of Brasenose College and this function took until 2015 true.

His main research interests are the social and economic history of the Roman Empire, Roman Egypt and the Vindolanda Castle . He worked on the important finds of Roman writing tablets from the castle for the British Museum . Bowman is one of the editors of the prestigious handbook The Cambridge Ancient History .
